By Meeth Agrawal

The archery events at the Paris Olympics 2024 brought mixed results for the Indian contingent. Bhajan Kaur showcased her prowess and advanced to the Round of 16, while her compatriot, Ankita Bhakat, faced an early exit in the Round of 64 in the women's individual event.

Bhajan Kaur, currently ranked 45th in the world, faced Syifa Nurafifah Kamal of Indonesia, who is ranked 727th in the Round of 64. Kaur finished 22nd in the individual ranking round with 659 points, while Kamal secured the 43rd spot with 640 points. Despite the significant gap in rankings, the match saw its fair share of tense moments.

The first set ended in a tie, with both archers scoring 27 points each. In the second set, Kamal edged ahead, scoring 29 to Kaur's 27, putting the Indonesian in a 3-1 lead in set points. However, Kaur's resilience shone through as she dominated the subsequent sets, scoring 29, 27, and 28 to Kamal's 27, 25, and 25, respectively. Kaur's 7-3 victory was a testament to her skill and composure under pressure.

Advancing to the Round of 32, Kaur was set to face the winner of the match between fellow Indian Ankita Bhakat and Poland's Wioleta Myszor.

Ankita Bhakat's Unexpected Exit

Ankita Bhakat, who was India's top performer in the ranking rounds with an impressive 11th-place finish and a score of 666, was expected to advance past Wioleta Myszor, who ranked 54th with a score of 626. However, the pressure of the Olympic stage proved challenging for Bhakat.

The match began with Bhakat losing the first set 26-27. She quickly regained her footing, winning the next two sets 29-26 and 28-27, bringing the set points to 4-2 in her favor. Just one more set win would have sealed her victory, but the tide turned. Bhakat faltered under pressure, losing the next two sets 27-29 and 27-28, ultimately conceding the match 6-4 to Myszor.

Bhajan Kaur, determined to avenge her compatriot, faced Wioleta Myszor in the Round of 32. Kaur displayed an outstanding performance, winning all three sets with scores of 28-23, 29-26, and 28-22, securing a flawless 6-0 victory and booking her place in the Round of 16.
