Indian archer Deepika Kumari has advanced to the pre-quarterfinals of the women's individual archery event at the Paris Olympics 2024 after a strong performance against Netherlands' Quinty Roeffen in the round of 32.
Deepika Kumari, who earlier secured a narrow victory in a shoot-off against Estonia's Reena Parnat, continued her form by defeating Roeffen with a final score of 6-2.

The match began with a solid start from Deepika, who shot a near-perfect sequence of 10, 10, and 9 to claim the first set 29-28. This gave her an early lead of 2-0. However, the Dutch teenager Quinty Roeffen, who had defeated Austria's Elisabeth Straka in the previous round, responded well in the second set. Roeffen's impressive shooting, which included two 10s and a 9, levelled the match at 2-2 as she edged out Kumari 29-27.
Deepika regained her composure in the third set, taking advantage of an error from Roeffen, whose first arrow landed outside the scoring zone. This mistake allowed Kumari to dominate the set 25-17, regaining the lead at 4-2. With momentum on her side, Deepika continued to perform consistently in the fourth set. She shot a sequence of 10, 9, and 9, while Roeffen faltered with a less consistent series of shots, leading to a 28-23 set win for Kumari, which secured her the match.
This victory propels Deepika Kumari into the round of 16, where she will face Germany's Michelle Kroppen on August 3. Kumari's journey through the competition so far has demonstrated her resilience and ability to handle pressure, particularly in the earlier round where she emerged victorious in a tense shoot-off against Parnat.
Deepika's performance in Paris is being closely watched as she aims to build on her achievements and make a significant impact in the tournament. Her experience and composure under pressure are crucial as she prepares to face tougher opponents in the upcoming rounds. With her eyes set firmly on an Olympic medal, Kumari's upcoming clash with Kroppen will be a key test of her form and mental fortitude as she continues her quest at the Paris 2024 Olympics.
