Paris Olympics: Bella Hadid, Adidas Controversy Brings Back Terrorising Memories of Munich 1972 Massacre

By Triyasha Chatterjee

The Paris Olympics 2024 have already seen their fair share of controversies. However, the latest involving model Bella Hadid and sportswear giant Adidas evoking memories of the 1972 Munich massacre.

Pro-Palestinian model Bella Hadid, was chosen to promote the re-release of Adidas' SL 72 trainers, originally designed for the 1972 Munich Olympics. While this campaign was intended to add to excitement for the upcoming games and bring about nostalgia but has instead stirred a complex mix of reactions that drew parallels between this and the Munich massacre.

Munich Massacre

The Munich massacre of 1972, in which Palestinian terrorists took Israeli athletes hostage and ultimately murdered 11 of them, remains one of the darkest moments in Olympic history. This event not only marked a tragedy but also exposed the vulnerability of international events to political and ideological conflicts.

The assassination of athletes during the games showed up how global platforms can be misused for political statements and violent actions. The backlash against the Adidas campaign is rooted in its timing and perceived insensitivity.

Critics argued that launching a campaign that references the 1972 Munich Olympics, particularly with a high-profile model like Hadid, who has been vocal about her Palestinian heritage, can be seen as a provocative and insensitive move. The decision to associate the brand's new line with a tragic historical event has been questioned by many, who feel that it trivializes the memory of the victims of the Munich massacre.

Supporters of the campaign, however, suggest that it is a mere coincidence and not an intentional reference to the tragedy. They argue that the SL 72 is a classic design with a significant place in Adidas' history, and its re-release is meant to celebrate the brand's legacy rather than dredge up painful memories.

In conclusion, while Adidas' intention might have been to celebrate its historical designs, the co-incidental association with the 1972 Munich massacre and the choice of Bella Hadid as the face of the campaign have led to a complex and emotional reaction. Hadid, on her part, however has attempted to address the concerns by emphasizing her support for peace and understanding.
