By MyKhel Staff

Dhiraj Bommadevara faced a heart-wrenching defeat in the Round of 32 of the individual archery event at the Paris Olympics 2024, losing to Eric Peters in a dramatic shoot-off.

Dhiraj's journey began with a strong performance in the Round of 64 (1/32 Elimination Round), where he defeated Adam Li of the Czech Republic with a score of 29-29, 29-26, 29-28, 28-26 (7-1). Dhiraj's consistent shooting secured his advancement, setting the stage for a challenging match against Peters.

The Round of 32 match was a tense battle, showcasing both archers' skills and resilience. Dhiraj started strong, winning the first set 28-27, thanks to a sequence of consistent 9s and 10s. However, Peters responded by narrowly taking the second set 29-28. The third set saw Dhiraj regain his lead with a score of 29-27, demonstrating his composure under pressure. Both archers hit the bullseye repeatedly in the fourth set, resulting in a 30-30 tie.

As the match progressed, the fifth set became a critical moment. Despite Dhiraj's excellent shooting, Peters managed to edge out a 30-29 victory, forcing the match into a shoot-off. In the shoot-off, both archers scored perfect 10s, but Peters' arrow was closer to the centre, clinching the win with a 6-5 score.

Dhiraj's heartbreak was evident as he had performed exceptionally well throughout the day. His final score against Peters was 28-27, 28-29, 29-27, 30-30, 29-30, and 10-10 (5-6) in the shoot-off.

Dhiraj, along with teammates Tarundeep Rai and Pravin Jadhav, earlier bowed out in the men's team quarterfinal with a subpar display against Turkey, which included reigning individual Olympic Champion Mete Gazoz in their line-up.

While Tarundeep Rai and Pravin Jadhav will compete in the men's individual rounds on August 1, Dhiraj will team up with Ankita Bhakat in the Mixed Team event, where they will take on Indonesia in the pre-quarters.
