Paris Olympics: Gagan Narang, Rohit Rajpal in Race to Replace Mary Kom as India''s Chef de Mission - Report

By MyKhel Staff

Olympic medallist shooter Gagan Narang and Davis Cup captain Rohit Rajpal have emerged as strong contenders to become the Indian contingent's Chef de Mission for the Paris Olympics, reported PTI.

This position became available after six-time world champion Mary Kom stepped down due to personal reasons, as confirmed by Indian Olympic Association (IOA) sources told the news agency.

Mary Kom, who had been appointed Chef de Mission by the IOA in March, resigned from the role in April, citing compelling personal reasons that left her with no choice but to step down. Her resignation has left a significant vacancy in the leadership of India's Olympic delegation.

An IOA source at the send-off ceremony for India's Olympic contingent revealed, "Most likely, it will be Gagan or Rohit for the role of Chef de Mission. It's a huge responsibility, and they are capable of managing it. Having said that, the weightlifting federation's Sahdev Yadav's name was also being considered."

It has also come to light that badminton legend Prakash Padukone was offered the position but declined. "Mr. Padukone is a well-respected figure in Indian sports. However, due to old age, he was a bit hesitant to take up the responsibility, and IOA respected his decision," the source added.

When asked about the selection, IOA President PT Usha stated, "I will share the name in the next four-five days."

The role of Chef de Mission is crucial as it involves ensuring the welfare of participating athletes, addressing their needs, and liaising with the organizing committee. More than 100 Indian athletes have qualified for the Paris Games, which are set to begin on July 26.

Gagan Narang, the London Olympics bronze medallist in the men's 10m air rifle event, has been overseeing India's operations at the shooting range, which is situated far from the main venues. India will field its largest-ever shooting contingent, with 21 shooters qualifying for the Games. If Narang is selected as Chef de Mission, the IOA will need to find a replacement to manage the shooting range operations.

Meanwhile, Rohit Rajpal, who is also the treasurer of the All India Tennis Association (AITA), may have to withdraw from the race due to personal reasons. Rajpal, who recently lost his mother, had to withdraw from the Davis Cup tie in Islamabad in February due to his mother's declining health. Rajpal is also an IOA Executive Committee member and is currently managing the Volleyball Federation of India as the head of the ad-hoc panel running the NSF.

The final decision on the appointment of India's Chef de Mission for the Paris Olympics is expected to be announced soon, as the IOA works to ensure strong leadership and support for the athletes in the upcoming Games.
