Paris Olympics: Indian Archery Coaches Struggle to Find Place in Games Village, Likely To Stay at Hotel

By Rishab V M

The Paris Olympics 2024 have posed some logistical hurdles, especially when it comes to accommodation. Finding enough space to accommodate the influx of athletes and all their support staff is proving to be a challenge, which includes the Indian contingent as well.

The Indian contingent has also been in controversy of late with regards to the accommodation at the Games Village. After a week of waiting, the archery team's support staff, including a coach, physiotherapist, and psychologist, are finally on their way to join the team in France, as reported by The Tribune.

Paris Olympics India Archery Coaches

The team, which includes Deepika Kumari, Bhajan Kaur, Ankita Bhagat, Tarundeep Rai, Pravin Jadhav, and Dhiraj Bommadevara, has been training in France since July 10th with only two coaches - Poornina Mahto and Woong Baek.

Archery head coach Baek Woong K, despite leading the Indian archery team to strong performances and securing their spot in the Paris Olympics, has been left out of the contingent as per recent developments.

"Such last-minute changes would impact the performance of the team. When you have so many personal coaches being allowed in other disciplines, why are you leaving out the head coach of the team under whom Indian teams have given good results in the last two years," an official was quoted as saying by the Hindustan Times.

Team coach Sonam and physiotherapist Arvind Yadav will be departing for France and a psychologist is expected to join them in a few days.

Accommodation seems to be under control for the most part. The Sports Ministry has secured housing for the athletes and some of their support staff within the Games village. This ensures the athletes have easy access to training facilities and other amenities.

A wrinkle in the plans has surfaced. The team has been informed that only two coaches will be allowed to stay in the village alongside the athletes. This creates a challenge and also raises concern: where will the remaining coaches be housed?

While most support staff won't be at the Games Village, they will have access to the competition venues. With a hotel stay outside the village a likely solution but logistical complexities arise, particularly regarding coordinating schedules and ensuring smooth travel between the village and the coach's accommodation.

Star Power vs. Equal Opportunity: Debate on Resource Allocation in Indian Sports

To house the personal coaches of star athletes PV Sindhu and Vinesh Phogat, the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) is forced to exclude some support staff of athletes from other sports from the main Olympic village.

The IOA is facing heat for potentially unequal treatment of athletes at the Paris Olympics. Despite promises from the Sports Ministry and others to address everyone's needs, reports suggest a focus on star athletes. This leaves the IOA scrambling to find alternative housing for some vital support staff who might be excluded from the main athlete village.

IOA president PT Usha, however, has come out in defense pointing out that India would send 68 coaches and 50 support staff for the 117 athletes.

"At IOA, we have embarked on an era when athletes are at the centre of our planning and preparations. You can see this from the fact that instead of the usual 3:1 ratio between athletes and support staff, we have worked hard to change it to slightly better than 1:1 ratio," she stated in a recent press release.

She added that several athletes can vouch that the IOA has put in their efforts in securing accreditations and visas for coaches, support staff, and even non-accredited journalists.

Usha expressed her desire for media members who report without sufficient information to take the time to understand the extensive efforts the IOA had made to include all personal coaches, mentors, physiotherapists, and psychologists in the contingent.

"We are confident that despite such misleading reports, IOA will be able to facilitate a speedy processing of visa requests of those coaches and support staff cleared by the Ministry. "I will continue to strive to put my best foot forward when it comes to ensuring the best possible support for each and every athlete in our contingent," she concluded.

In addition to IOA and SAI officials, a 13-member IOA medical team will assist athletes in the Games Village. Personal coaches, trainers, and physiotherapists for several top athletes have also been included. However, in some sports like wrestling, table tennis, and weightlifting, there are more support staff members than athletes, and not all of them can be accommodated in the Games Village
