Paris Olympics: Indian Government Spent Rs 5.72 Crore on Neeraj Chopra's Gold Quest But How Much They Spent on Others?

As India gets ready for the Paris Olympics, all eyes are on the country’s top athletes who will compete in 16 sports. The sports ministry has invested Rs 41.81 crore to support these athletes.

Javelin star Neeraj Chopra, the Olympic and World Champion, is a strong contender for another medal. With Rs 5.72 crore invested in his training in Patiala and Europe, he's been in top form, winning gold at the 2022 Asian Games and Doha Diamond League.

In badminton, Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty are big medal hopes. Their training at the Pullela Gopichand Academy in Hyderabad has received Rs 5.62 crore. PV Sindhu, who has already won silver in Rio and bronze in Tokyo, is aiming for gold, supported by Rs 3.13 crore for her training in Bengaluru.

Weightlifter S Mirabai Chanu, despite recent injuries, remains a key hope. Her training at SAI NSNIS Patiala has been backed with Rs 2.74 crore. She made history with her Tokyo silver, becoming only the second Indian woman to win an Olympic weightlifting medal.

Shooting stars Anish Bhanwala, Manu Bhaker, Sift Kaur Samra, Aishwary Pratap Singh Tomar, and Elavenil Valarivan are all set for Paris. Their training has been funded with Rs 2.41 crore, Rs 1.68 crore, Rs 1.63 crore, Rs 1.56 crore, and Rs 1.32 crore respectively, mostly at the SAI Dr. Karni Singh Shooting Range in New Delhi.

Tennis player Rohan Bopanna and table tennis player Manika Batra are also poised for success. Bopanna, training in Bengaluru, has received Rs 1.56 crore while Batra's training has been supported with Rs 1.30 crore. She is the first Indian woman to be ranked in the ITTF top 25.

In archery, Dhiraj Bommadevara has secured a quota for Paris with Rs 1.07 crore for training in Sonepat. Sailor Vishnu Saravanan, preparing for his second Olympics, has an investment of Rs 99.33 lakh.

Boxers Nikhat Zareen and Lovlina Borgohain are looking to add to their medal collections. Zareen has received Rs 91.71 lakh and Borgohain Rs 81.76 lakh, both training at SAI NSNIS Patiala.

Wrestlers Vinesh Phogat and Antim Panghal are also strong contenders. Phogat’s training has been supported with Rs 70.45 lakh, while Panghal has received Rs 66.55 lakh.

Golfer Aditi Ashok, who narrowly missed a medal in Tokyo, has received Rs 63.21 lakh for her training in Bengaluru. Young swimmer Dhindhi Desinghu, the youngest athlete in the Indian contingent, has received Rs 10.87 lakh.
