Paris Olympics: Tajinderpal Singh Toor To Jyothi Yarraji, List of Indian Track and Field Athletes Who Qualified Through World Ranking Quota

Indian athletics has reason to celebrate as several athletes have secured their spots for the Paris 2024 Olympics through their impressive world rankings.

Asian Games gold medallist and national record holder Tajinderpal Singh Toor and Commonwealth Games medallist Annu Rani have secured Paris 2024 Olympics athletics quotas for India via their world rankings.

Paris Olympics List of Indian athletes qualified through world ranking

The qualification period for athletics events for Paris 2024 concluded on 30 June. Nevertheless, the official Road to Paris 2024 standings were confirmed by World Athletics on Tuesday.

Athletes could secure Paris 2024 quotas for their country either by surpassing the entry standard for their events or by ranking within the cut-off on the Road to Paris rankings after the qualification period closed.

The former Asian record holder Tajinderpal Singh Toor secured the Paris 2024 quota after being ranked 23rd in men's shot put. In the women's shot put event, Asian Championships silver medallist and national record holder Abha Khatua, who was also ranked 23rd, qualified for Paris as well.

Javelin thrower Annu Rani secured the 21st spot in the Road to Paris rankings, with the top 32 athletes qualifying for the upcoming Summer Games.

Jyothi Yarraji, the queen of the 100m hurdles, secured the 34th position in the women's 100m hurdles, ensuring her place among the top 40 qualifiers. The national record holder recently won a gold medal with a timing of 13.06 at the recently concluded Inter State Athletics Championships in Panchkula.

Parul Chaudhary, ranked 34th in the women's 5000m event with a cut-off of 42, also secured a spot for the Paris 2024 Olympics. Additionally, she met the qualification standard for the women's 3000m steeplechase, which is 9:23.00, by recording a time of 9:15.31 in the World Championships last year. Parul also participated in the 3000m steeplechase at the Inter State Athletics Championships, winning the race with a time of 9:45.70.

Asian Games double medallist Parul Chaudhary is the only Indian track & field athlete to qualify for the Paris Olympics 2024 in two different events: the 5000m and the 3000m steeplechase.

In men's triple jump, two Indian athletes, Abdulla Aboobacker and Praveen Chithravel, have secured spots in the 32-man cut. Aboobacker holds the 21st position in the Road to Paris rankings, while Chithravel is ranked 23rd. The 2022 Commonwealth Games medallist Abdulla Aboobacker gave a brilliant performance at the Inter State Athletics Championships, where he crossed the 17-metre mark for the first time in 2024.

Sarvesh Kushare has also earned a spot in the men's high jump competition by placing 23rd in a cut-off list of 32 athletes. Tejaswin Shankar, finishing 37th, did not make the shortlist.

India's men's long jump national record holder Jeswin Aldrin narrowly missed the cut-off at 33rd place in the world rankings, just outside the top 32. However, Jeswin could potentially move up into the top 32 athletes' cut-off list due to an injury that will likely prevent his compatriot Murali Sreeshankar, currently seventh on the list, from competing in the Paris 2024 Olympics after meeting the long jump entry standard last year.

Suraj Panwar qualified for the men's 20km race walk event via the Road to Paris rankings. Akshdeep Singh, Paramjeet Singh Bisht, Ram Baboo, and Vikash Singh had previously met the entry standard for the event. India can select up to three athletes from these five qualifiers.
