Women’s 49kg Weightlifting Startlist

Chanu will face formidable competition in the 49kg weightlifting event. Here is the start list of Women’s 49kg Weightlifting at Paris Olympics 2024:

  • Hou Zhihui (People’s Republic of China): The Tokyo 2020 gold medalist and world record holder in snatch.
  • Mirabai Chanu (India)
  • Suzuki Rira (Japan)
  • Randafiarison Rosina (Madagascar)
  • Beatriz Piron Candelario (Dominican Republic)
  • Khambao Surodchana (Thailand)
  • Nicola Velasco Lagatao (Guam)
  • Mihaela Valentina Cambei (Romania)
  • Jourdan Delacruz (United States of America)
  • Katherin Echandia Zarate (Venezuela)
  • Fang Wan-Ling (Chinese Taipei)
  • Nina Sterckx (Belgium)

After securing a silver medal at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics with a total lift of 202kg, Chanu continued her success by winning gold at the 2022 Commonwealth Games and silver at the 2022 IWF World Championships. However, her path has not been without obstacles.

A significant setback came in 2023 when Chanu suffered a hip injury during the Asian Games, which led to a fourth-place finish and sidelined her for several months. Despite this challenge, she made a comeback at the IWF World Cup in Qatar, where she lifted a total of 184kg.

Chanu qualified for the Paris Olympics 2024 after securing the second position in the Olympic Qualification Rankings, bolstered by her performance where she lifted a total of 200kg (87kg+113kg) at the 2022 World Championships.

With the absence of North Korea’s Ri Song Gum, who holds the world record with a total lift of 221kg, the field may be slightly more open. This could potentially benefit Chanu, giving her an opportunity to capitalize on her experience and resilience.
