In its original French translation, the term "Chef de Mission" signifies the "head of mission." The Chef de Mission holds the most crucial administrative role in any national contingent participating in an international multi-discipline event.

It typically denotes the individual who guides a national delegation encompassing athletes, coaches, and other support staff forming the Mission Team at an international competition.

A Chef de Mission guides a nation at every multi-sport Games, whether the Olympic Games or the Youth Olympic Games. One of the key duties of the Chef de Mission is to serve as the team's spokesperson before and during the Olympic Games.

Additionally, they act as a mentor, supporter, and cheerleader, striving to motivate and inspire the team while safeguarding the athletes' performances. They serve as the primary liaison between the contingent's sporting members, the organizing committees, and other relevant stakeholders.

To serve as the Chef de Mission at an Olympic Games, the individual must have competed as an Olympian themselves. Athletes who have solely participated in the Youth Olympic Games are eligible to apply for the role of Chef de Mission for those specific Games.

Gagan Narang named Chef de Mission for India at Paris 2024 Olympics

Gagan Narang, an Olympic medalist, was announced as the new Chef-de-Mission for India's Paris 2024 Olympics contingent by the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) on Monday, taking over from boxing legend Mary Kom.

Narang won a bronze medal in the men's 10m air rifle event at the London 2012 Olympics. Mary Kom, a bronze medalist in women's boxing at the same Games, had previously resigned from the position of Chef de Mission due to personal reasons.

PV Sindhu, a two-time Olympic medalist in badminton, and Sharath Kamal, a 13-time Commonwealth Games medalist in table tennis, have been selected as the flag-bearers.

In a move towards gender equality, the Paris 2024 Olympics will mark the second consecutive Summer Games where India will have two flag-bearers. At the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, Mary Kom and Manpreet Singh had the honor of being India's flag-bearers.

The flag-bearer at the Olympic Games serves as a symbolic leader, leading their country's delegation during the grand Opening Ceremony parade. They proudly display the country's flag as they march, symbolizing unity and national pride.
