New Delhi, Feb 1: The recently concluded World Table Tennis (WTT) Star Contender Goa 2024 marked a significant milestone for the global table tennis community as Mapusa's Peddem Indoor Stadium welcomed top-tier athletes, including French prodigy and World No. 6 Felix Lebrun, and Tokyo Olympics bronze medalist Cheng I-Ching, who clinched the men's and women's singles titles, respectively.
This prestigious event not only showcased a record-breaking Indian presence, with 43 participants competing but also bolstered the qualification prospects for the upcoming 2024 Paris Olympic Games. Indian athletes garnered valuable ranking points with stellar performances, buoyed by enthusiastic home support.

WTT Star Contender Goa stands as India's premier international table tennis tournament, co-hosted by Stupa Sports Analytics and Ultimate Table Tennis under the aegis of the Table Tennis Federation of India (TTFI).
The standout performer for India in the tournament was the 25-year-old Hyderabad paddler Sreeja, who advanced to the singles quarter-finals, propelling her up 38 spots in the world rankings to achieve a career-best position. With current rankings of 36 and 51 respectively, Manika Batra and Sreeja have significantly enhanced their chances for Paris Olympics qualification.
"WTT Star Contender Goa 2024 was a pivotal moment for me, perfectly timed in an Olympic year. I extend my gratitude to the organizers, my coach, my physiotherapist, and fans for their unwavering support. Playing in my home country always brings a sense of familiarity and comfort, which positively impacts performance. This experience has undoubtedly boosted my confidence moving forward," expressed Sreeja.
Additionally, the tournament witnessed the unprecedented success of five Indian pairs reaching the quarter-finals across categories, a remarkable achievement in a WTT Star Contender event.
"It's gratifying to witness Indian athletes excel in this tournament as we endeavour to provide them with a vital international platform and exposure. The debut of 18 Indian paddlers in the WTT Star Contender is a significant milestone for Indian table tennis.
"With the participation of elite international players and intense competition, this event has provided Indian athletes with invaluable momentum ahead of the upcoming World Team Table Tennis Championships. We wish them the best of luck," Malik emphasised.
Following the conclusion of WTT Star Contender Goa 2024, attention now shifts to the World Team Table Tennis Championships scheduled from February 16 to 25, where the top eight teams will vie for qualification to the Paris Olympics.
