Parsvanath Intl open chess tournament begins; Dhara upsets Kamble

New Delhi, Jan 13 (UNI) The sixth Parsvanath International Open Chess Tournament began with a big upset in the very first round as unseeded Dhara Gupta of Delhi beat International Master Vikramaditya Kamble here today .

Meanwhile, apart from Kamble, almost all top seeded players of the tournament, including a record 15 Grand Masters and three Women Grandmasters, posted easy victories to advance to the second round with full points in their kitty.

Top seeded Ghaem Maghami Ehsan of Iran had an easy outing against Sumant Subramaniam of Malaysia, whereas the second seed and leader of the Indian challenge in this tournament, Surya Shekhar Ganguly made short work of Chiraranjan Bhuyan.

World Champion, Vishwanathan Anand's former coach, Ubilava Elizbar also earned full points for himself by defeating Sanjib Ghosh.

Among the Indian players, Abhijit Kunte and R B Ramesh also registerd easy wins as they beat S K Sharma and S Kaushik respectively.

Another major surprise came in the form of a draw for G M Batyrov Sapar of Turkmenistan, who was denied victory by a much lower ranked Pereira Johnharry of Singapore.

The second round of the tournament, in which 20 players from different countries are taking part, was still in progress.
