Pedaling Towards Wellness: Cycling as the Next Fitness Revolution

By Rajat Chandolia

In the ever-evolving landscape of fitness, a remarkable transformation has unfolded, where what was once a mere afterthought has now become an integral part of our lives. Fitness enthusiasts have borne witness to various revolutions over the years, from the jogging craze of the 1970s to the aerobics frenzy of the 1980s. These trends have indelibly shaped our approach to health and well-being.

Today, two simple yet powerful fitness activities are at the forefront of this revolution - running and cycling. While running has undeniably laid the foundation for this shift, it is cycling that is now emerging as the next giant leap in enhancing human potential.

Transformative Effects of Running Era

Recent years saw a tremendous surge in running, which has emerged as an accessible and cost-effective means to improve physical well-being. According to Procam International, a Mumbai-based sports consultancy that organizes marathons, approximately INR 700 crore has been invested in 1,600 events, culminating in a USD 400 million industry in India. The meteoric rise of running has led to the formation of communities worldwide, including running clubs and groups that provide unwavering support to enthusiasts, amateurs and even professionals.

Cycling: A Paradigm Shift in Fitness and Lifestyle

Much like running, recreational cycling is now taking its place as a cornerstone of fitness. Fitness enthusiasts have come to recognize cycling as an exceptional means of bolstering physical and mental health. Take, for instance, the vibrant cycling culture in central Puducherry, where local residents pedal their way to schools, workplaces, and markets, while tourists rent bicycles to explore the scenic surroundings.

Cycling offers an all-encompassing spectrum of benefits, enhancing cardiovascular fitness, muscle strength, and joint flexibility, while also managing weight. It is also a potent stress reliever, elevating mood, fostering mental clarity, improving sleep quality, and boosting self-esteem for overall well-being. The emergence of group cycling has paved the way towards vibrant community building, enabling people to thrive socially and multiply their potential in numerous ways.

Infrastructure and Government Support

Despite the surge in popularity, cycling faces challenges in India's bustling urban areas. The results of a 2021 survey conducted in 50 cities by Cycles4Change Challenge indicate that speeding vehicles, traffic congestion, and poorly maintained roads make it difficult for residents to embrace cycling.

To truly propel cycling into the mainstream, the government must incorporate it into long-term development plans and prioritize the safety and security of cyclists.

Creating a Cycling-Friendly Future

Puducherry offers a compelling example of progress, with the government introducing a cycle-sharing scheme in 2020 to make cycling accessible without the burden of owning a cycle. Today, it is one among 500 cities across 49 countries enjoying this convenience. Similarly, many other state governments such as Tamil Nadu, Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat, and West Bengal, have initiated programs to promote cycling among government employees and students.

Governments can further encourage cycling by designating dedicated "car-free" days, temporarily closing select main roads on weekends and holidays for the exclusive use of cyclists. An example of this is Raahgiri Day, which was an initiative launched in the National Capital Region (NCR) to promote the safety of cyclists and pedestrians.4

Cycling brings not only health benefits but also positively impacts the environment by improving air quality, among other things. The widespread adoption of cycling as a daily mode of transportation can also aid in reducing the daily traffic congestion on roads.

In addition to government efforts, workplaces can play a pivotal role in ushering in this culture change, by encouraging policies and provisions that promote cycling, Companies can also host cycling marathons, mirroring successful events and marathons that have made running a way of life across the country. Helping to usher in a new lifestyle of cycling.

It's Time To Pedal Up

Beyond promoting physical, mental, and environmental benefits, cycling also fosters a sense of community among its enthusiasts. To cultivate happier and more productive societies, it is imperative for companies to incorporate cycling as a regular practice, aligning with the ever-expanding potential of human well-being and progress. It is, indeed, time to pedal up and embrace the transformative power of cycling.
