Jhonattan Vegas maintained his lead at the PGA Championship after Friday's second round at Quail Hollow. Starting two shots ahead, Vegas ended with a one-under-par 70, reaching eight under for the week. Max Homa, who claimed his first PGA Tour win at Quail Hollow in 2019, shot a seven-under-par 64, placing him third.
Vegas had a four-stroke advantage approaching the par-four final hole but faced challenges when his approach landed in a greenside bunker. A routine up-and-down turned into a double-bogey as he mishit his third shot and missed two short putts. "Solid round today, a little bit up and down," Vegas remarked.

Despite finishing poorly on the 18th, Vegas expressed satisfaction with his overall performance. He noted that starting late the previous day and returning early affected his mood. "It was tough coming back," he said. "But I would say it was a very solid round." He began shakily but managed birdies on both the front and back nines.
Vegas bogeyed his second hole but quickly recovered to even par by the seventh. Nearly chipping in for birdie from 93 feet at the ninth, he added three more birdies on the back nine. A fortunate break on the 17th saw his tee shot bounce off a rake near a bunker onto the green.
The Venezuelan golfer relished leading at Quail Hollow, despite being far from an unlikely victory. "It means a lot," Vegas stated. "This is kind of what we put all those hours for." He acknowledged not having many such opportunities in his career but emphasized perseverance.
"You never know when things are going to turn your way," Vegas added. He stressed keeping focused and working hard while enjoying the process. Leading a major tournament is challenging, but he felt proud of his solid performance that day.
