Oscar Piastri anticipates a challenging Qatar Grand Prix, even though he outqualified his McLaren teammate and title rival Lando Norris for Sunday's race. After securing a sprint victory earlier, Piastri's quest for his first world championship remains strong. He finished 0.108 seconds ahead of Norris, who had to abandon his final lap due to grip issues at turn two, allowing Piastri to seize the opportunity.

Piastri's pole position is his first since the Dutch Grand Prix in August, marking a significant moment after some tough months for McLaren. Red Bull's Max Verstappen, needing to finish above Norris on Sunday to maintain his title hopes, will start third on the grid, just ahead of Mercedes' George Russell. Piastri has narrowed the gap to Norris to 22 points following his dominant sprint win.

Norris could become the 11th British Formula One champion if he finishes ahead of both Piastri and Verstappen. Despite this pressure, Piastri believes he's in an excellent position to compete at the front. "I will try my best," said Piastri. "Starting from the best spot, I'll aim to replicate today's sprint performance."

Norris acknowledged missing out on pole but remained optimistic about starting from the front row in what could be a pivotal race for him. With Verstappen still vying for a fifth consecutive world title after a mid-season resurgence, Norris knows the Dutchman remains a threat. "You never know," Norris remarked. "The first few laps offer opportunities for everyone."

Ahead of this weekend's race, McLaren confirmed that both Norris and Piastri would be free to compete on track despite Verstappen's presence. "Not yet, no," Norris replied when asked about his strategy for the first lap. He added that they would review their approach overnight.

Piastri is aware of the challenges ahead as he aims to keep the drivers' championship battle alive until Abu Dhabi. "It will be pretty tough," he noted regarding the two-stop strategy and intense G-forces expected during the race. However, he remains hopeful that conditions won't be as harsh as previous years.

Norris expressed satisfaction with his car's performance improvements over recent days. "The car has been feeling good," he said. "I was much happier today than yesterday." As they prepare for a long race day, both drivers are focused on making strategic decisions that could impact their championship standings.
