Oscar Piastri expressed optimism before the Bahrain Grand Prix after securing pole position with a time of 1:29.841. This marked his second pole in Formula One, placing him 0.168 seconds ahead of George Russell. However, Russell received a grid penalty for leaving the garage prematurely during qualifying, dropping him to third behind Charles Leclerc. Pierre Gasly moved up to fourth, while Kimi Antonelli also dropped due to Mercedes' operational mistake.
McLaren had been expected to dominate with a one-two finish after strong practice sessions. Piastri maintained his speed, but Lando Norris faltered on his final lap, allowing other drivers to close the gap. Despite this, Piastri remains just 13 points behind Norris and 12 behind Max Verstappen in the standings, offering him a chance to narrow the gap in Sakhir.

Norris found himself outside the top five after a disappointing session, with Verstappen just one spot behind him. Lewis Hamilton secured ninth place, finishing ahead of reigning world champion Verstappen. Norris was initially third in the third qualifying session but made an error at Turn One on his last run, losing more time and finishing 0.426 seconds off pole.
Piastri shared his thoughts on the weekend: "I've felt confident out there pretty much all weekend. FP1 was an experience for us all. I think it felt more like a rally car than an F1 car." He added that he felt comfortable with the car from then on and noted their good pace in FP3.
During qualifying, competitors closed in more than Piastri preferred, but he managed crucial laps when needed most. He expressed satisfaction with his performance despite the pressure from others.
Norris admitted to being slow throughout the weekend without any clear reasons for his lack of speed. "I was just slow," he said candidly. "I have been slow this whole weekend, to be honest. Nothing too surprising." He praised the car and team but acknowledged letting them down by not delivering results.
The upcoming race presents an opportunity for Piastri to further close the gap in standings against Norris and Verstappen as they compete for crucial points in Bahrain.
