Oscar Piastri, driving for McLaren, is aiming for a win in Las Vegas on Sunday. This comes after his teammate Lando Norris's championship hopes dwindled. Although Norris can still mathematically challenge Max Verstappen, who is close to securing his fourth title, the odds are against him. With McLaren leading Ferrari by 36 points in the constructors' championship, the team's focus might shift there.
Piastri mentioned that he might still need to assist Norris in specific scenarios. However, he emphasised that most situations would allow him to race independently. "The drivers' championship picture is very slim, and the constructors' championship is certainly not over for us," Piastri stated. He added that he aims to win this weekend unless asked otherwise.

Max Verstappen faced challenges during the first practice session in Las Vegas, finishing 17th. Meanwhile, Lando Norris secured the second-fastest time behind Lewis Hamilton. Piastri ended up eighth but encountered an unusual issue where his car wouldn't turn off after reaching the pit lane. Fortunately, this problem was resolved without further complications.
Norris addressed reporters about team dynamics and past race orders involving Piastri letting him pass. He explained that team interests have always been paramount and will remain so. "Everything we've done, we've just swapped a position," Norris said, highlighting how it benefited his championship fight.
Norris also acknowledged helping Piastri in races like Baku and expressed confidence in their teamwork strategy. He credited Andrea Stella for ensuring decisions never compromised team results. "I think Andrea made it very clear from the beginning that we would never do something that would make the team result worse," Norris remarked.
The upcoming race in Las Vegas holds significant importance for both McLaren drivers as they navigate their roles within the team strategy while pursuing individual goals. With Verstappen's dominance likely continuing, McLaren's focus on securing their lead over Ferrari remains crucial.
