Pistons Rally From 3-1 Deficit To Knock Off Magic And Reach East Semifinals

The Detroit Pistons completed a major turnaround by beating the Orlando Magic 116-94 in Game 7, sealing passage to the Eastern Conference semifinals. Detroit became only the 15th team in NBA history to erase a 3-1 series deficit, and will now meet the Cleveland Cavaliers, with Game 1 of that matchup scheduled for Tuesday.

This comeback also carried strong historical weight for the franchise. It marked Detroit’s first playoff series win since 2008, when the Pistons also eliminated Orlando. It was only the second time Detroit recovered from 3-1 down in a series, repeating the feat achieved against the Magic in 2003, and underlined how the team handled sustained pressure.

Pistons Rally to Reach East Semifinals

Detroit’s recovery involved three straight wins and a major escape in Game 6. The Pistons trailed by 24 points in the second half of that contest yet still extended the series, setting up the decisive Game 7 at home. That earlier rally helped shape belief within the group before the final showdown with Orlando.

Game 7 featured standout production from Cade Cunningham and Tobias Harris. Cunningham finished with 32 points, 12 assists and two blocks, driving Detroit’s offence. Harris added 30 points, nine rebounds and three steals. They became the first Pistons team-mates with at least 30 points each in a playoff game since Bob Lanier scored 33 and Howard Porter had 30 in 1977.

Cunningham maintained that Orlando’s resistance sharpened Detroit’s focus across the series. Cunningham averaged 32.4 points over the seven games, and highlighted how the battle with the Magic tested Detroit’s mentality and execution on both ends. The guard stressed that the experience should help prepare the Pistons for the challenge posed by Cleveland.

"Credit to [the Magic], they pushed us," Cunningham, who averaged 32.4 points in the series, said. "They really made us take a look in the mirror. I think we got a lot better from this series. I got a lot better. I learned a lot about myself, learned a lot about the team. So, I think this series really is going to set us up for our next series, and we'll be a lot better for it."

Detroit’s overall season formed the backdrop to this surge. The Pistons produced a strong regular season and carried momentum into the playoffs, so an early exit would have contradicted their progress. Cunningham explained how the group responded when facing elimination and described the emotional impact of winning a Game 7 on home court.

"We had a great regular season. We built a lot of momentum going into this playoffs, and to lose in the first round would have really stung. So, we wanted to perform and to figure it out and to come back from 3-1, odds against us, and to come back and win it at home feels good. It feels really good. And we're excited for what's to come."

Key figures from the series and Game 7 underline Detroit’s turnaround against Orlando. The table below summarises the main numbers from the Pistons’ victory and their wider playoff context against the Magic.

The organisation’s belief was echoed by coach J.B. Bickerstaff, who stated that confidence in the group never faded despite the early deficit. Bickerstaff highlighted the trust within the locker room when Detroit fell 3-1 behind, and pointed to the players’ response over the final three games as evidence of that mindset.

"I mean, to be honest with you, I never doubted that we were going to win this series," Detroit coach J.B. Bickerstaff said. "And that's the truth of the matter."

The series also drew attention on social media as the Pistons’ rally developed. Detroit’s official account shared celebrations after Game 7, reflecting the scale of the achievement for a franchise that had waited since 2008 for a playoff series win, and underlining the significance of overcoming the Magic again in a deciding game.

Detroit now turn attention to the Eastern Conference semifinals against the Cleveland Cavaliers, carrying the confidence of a rare 3-1 comeback and a commanding Game 7 win over Orlando. The Pistons arrive with Cunningham in scoring form, Harris contributing on both ends, and a group that has already handled serious playoff pressure.
