Rory McIlroy and Scottie Scheffler lead the marquee groups at the Players Championship, with organisers pairing many of the world’s top golfers together for the opening two rounds at TPC Sawgrass, where McIlroy arrives as defending champion and Scheffler tees off as the current world number one.
McIlroy lifted the Players Championship trophy last year, then went on to claim a long-awaited first Masters title, finally securing a fifth career major. Since that victory at Augusta National, results have dipped and a back problem forced McIlroy to withdraw from the Arnold Palmer Invitational.

The Northern Irishman is grouped with Xander Schauffele and Hideki Matsuyama across the first two rounds of the title defence, creating one of the standout threesomes. McIlroy is only the eighth golfer to win this tournament more than once and now targets further history on the Stadium Course.
If McIlroy retains the title, McIlroy would match Scheffler as the only golfers to record back-to-back victories at the Players Championship. Scheffler, who chases further success after a consistent run at the top of the rankings, will begin in a high-profile group with Tommy Fleetwood and returning Justin Thomas.
The only three-time winner of the Players Championship remains Jack Nicklaus, and Scheffler has a chance to move closer to that benchmark this week. "Any time you get mentioned with somebody like Jack Nicklaus it means you're doing something right, Scheffler said. I'm not going to step into the tournament thinking about winningI'm going to be stepping on the first tee trying to execute and do what I normally do."
With leading names healthy enough to compete, including McIlroy after recent back issues and Thomas following injury, the early rounds at TPC Sawgrass set up a strong contest, where McIlroy chases a rare repeat, Scheffler looks to extend top form, and Nicklaus’ long-standing mark frames the wider narrative.
