Prime Minister Narendra Modi recently met 18-year-old chess prodigy D Gukesh following his historic victory at the World Chess Championship. Gukesh, who became the youngest-ever world chess champion by defeating Ding Liren in Singapore.
He gifted PM Modi an autographed chessboard, which is the original board that he played against Ding Liren. The board which holds the autographs of both Gukesh and Liren is now a prized memento for the leader.

During their interaction, PM Modi commended Gukesh's determination, dedication, and composure. "I have been closely interacting with him for a few years now, and what strikes me most about him is his determination and dedication. His confidence is truly inspiring," wrote the Prime Minister on X.
He recalled a viral video of an 11-year-old Gukesh expressing his dream to become the youngest chess champion, Modi lauded the young Grandmaster for turning this vision into reality through hard work.
Gukesh's victory over Ding Liren in the World Chess Championship was a remarkable feat. After losing the first game, Gukesh staged a strong comeback, culminating in a decisive win in the 14th game to clinch the title with a 7.5-6.5 scoreline.
With this achievement, Gukesh became only the second Indian after Viswanathan Anand to secure the coveted title, surpassing Garry Kasparov's record as the youngest champion. PM Modi also highlighted the importance of yoga and meditation in Gukesh's journey.
He said, "Our conversation today revolved around the transformative potential of yoga and meditation." He praised Gukesh's humility, stating, "Upon winning, he was composed, basking in his glory while fully understanding how to process this hard-earned victory."
Acknowledging the role of Gukesh's parents in his success, Modi remarked, "In the success of every athlete, their parents play a pivotal role. I complimented Gukesh's parents for supporting him through thick and thin. Their dedication will inspire countless parents of young aspirants who dream of pursuing sports as a career."
Gukesh's extraordinary journey includes becoming the third-youngest Grandmaster at 12 years, 7 months, and 17 days. In 2024, he achieved milestones such as winning the Candidates Tournament, leading India to a Chess Olympiad gold, and claiming the world title.
