Poland Captain Dagmara Skirzynska Shines at Kho Kho World Cup with Volleyball Skills

By MyKhel Staff

Dagmara Skirzynska, the 22-year-old captain of the Poland women's team at the inaugural Kho Kho World Cup, began her sporting journey in volleyball at the age of nine. She grew up in Gdansk, a city in northern Poland.

Dagmara was drawn to volleyball during her school years. Her passion for the sport continued through university, where she competed at a higher level before discovering the traditional Indian sport of Kho Kho three years ago.

Recalling how she started, Dagmara said, "It all began when someone from Satyam, a management company, introduced Kho Kho at our university. That's how I got involved, and it's been an incredible experience since." Dagmara's transition from volleyball to Kho Kho has been seamless.

It was thanks to her experience as a libero-a defensive specialist known for speed and agility. "Being a libero required quick reflexes, swiftness, and anticipation. These are the same qualities needed in Kho Kho. In volleyball, you must think ahead when attackers spike, and in Kho Kho, you need similar foresight to plan your moves. It's been a smooth transition for me," she explained.

For Dagmara, Kho Kho is reminiscent of childhood games she played in Poland. "It's a unique and exciting sport, different from anything else in Poland. It reminds me of games we used to play as kids in Polish barracks. The familiarity made me want to try it, and I've loved it ever since," she shared.

While pursuing higher studies in Physical Education at Gdansk University, Dagmara has also been teaching at a primary school, promoting Kho Kho among her students. "I teach physical education to children from first to eighth grade. Over the past three years, I've introduced them to Kho Kho, and they're thrilled about it. I believe the sport has great potential on a global stage," she said.

As the Polish team prepares for its first match in the tournament, Dagmara shared insights into their training challenges back home. "Right now, it's around 1°C in Poland, and snow is falling like it's Christmas. Playing outside is impossible, so we train indoors. Despite the cold, we've had productive training sessions and feel ready for the competition," she added.

Dagmara's journey from volleyball courts in Gdansk to leading her national team at the Kho Kho World Cup in India is a testament to her adaptability and dedication. Combining her athletic skills with her passion for teaching, she hopes to inspire more people in Poland to embrace this traditional Indian sport and help it grow internationally.
