Micah Nori Named Head Coach Of The Portland Trail Blazers
The Portland Trail Blazers are finalising plans to appoint Minnesota Timberwolves lead assistant Micah Nori as their new head coach. The decision follows an internal search and marks the franchise’s latest move to stabilise leadership after a turbulent season on and off the court.
This change comes shortly after interim coach Tiago Splitter departed to become Chicago Bulls head coach. Splitter stepped into the Portland Trail Blazers head coach role last season on a temporary basis, guiding the team through a difficult transition period and back into the Western Conference play-offs.

Splitter took over after the Trail Blazers promoted the former player when Chauncey Billups was arrested in connection with a gambling investigation. Under Splitter, Portland finished the regular campaign 42-40, a crucial improvement that enabled the club to re-enter the postseason picture.
The Trail Blazers then defeated the Phoenix Suns in the NBA Play-In Tournament. That victory secured the seventh seed in the Western Conference and delivered Portland’s first postseason appearance since 2021. The achievement gave the next Portland Trail Blazers head coach a platform to build on rather than starting from a full rebuild.
Nori, aged 52, has built a long résumé as an NBA assistant coach since 2009. Nori worked with the Toronto Raptors from 2009 to 2013, then joined the Sacramento Kings between 2013 and 2015. The coach later served with the Denver Nuggets from 2015 to 2018 and the Detroit Pistons from 2018 to 2021.
After leaving Detroit, Nori moved to the Minnesota Timberwolves as lead assistant. That role increased Nori’s responsibilities in game planning and player development. The experience with multiple organisations is expected to inform Nori’s approach as Portland Trail Blazers head coach, especially with a roster seeking continuity.
During last season’s play-offs, Portland opened the first round against second seed San Antonio Spurs. The Trail Blazers split the opening two games of the series. However, San Antonio, which later became Western Conference champion, claimed the next three contests to win the series 4-1.
The move to hire Nori was first reported on social media by Shams Charania. The reporter stated that Nori is highly respected around the league and highlighted the length of Nori’s coaching career. The post underlined how the Portland Trail Blazers head coach position now passes to a long-serving assistant.
Nori now inherits a team that recently returned to the play-offs and has faced coaching upheaval. With Portland’s 42-40 record, the recent play-in success and the first-round exit to San Antonio, the new Portland Trail Blazers head coach steps into a role defined by both progress and unfinished work.
