Praveen Chithravel surpasses triple jump national record with 17.37m jump; ratification awaited

Praveen Chithravel made the biggest jump of his career as the Indian triple jumper leaped 17.37 metre at an athletics meet in the Cuban capital Havana on Saturday. The effort surpasses the triple jump national record of 17.30m but a ratification of it is awaited.

Praveen Chithravel's record effort came off his fifth jump at the Prueba de Confrontacion 2023, which was a legal jump as it came with a tailwind of -1.5m/s. The permissible limit is +2m/s. The previous men's triple jump national record of 17.30m was set by Renjith Maheswary at the third Indian Grand Prix in Bangalore in 2016.

The 21-year-old lateral jumper also qualified for the Budapest World Athletics Championships 2023 in August as the qualification standard is set at 17.20m. This was Chithravel's second biggest jump of the season as the Tamil Nadu athlete earlier jumped 17.17 at the Indian Open back in March.

Chithravel's previous personal best was 17.18m, which came at the Inter-State Championships in Chennai last year in June. The triple jumper also recorded his indoor season personal best back in February when he jumped 16.98m at the Asian Indoor Championships in Nur Sultan, Kazakhstan.

At the event in Havana, two other Indians also competed in the triple jump with Thirumaran Selva Prabhu finishing fourth with an attempt of 16.58m; a new India U-20 record. Asian Games champion Arpinder Singh finished sixth with a disappointing effort of 15.03m.
