Praveen Kumar has etched his name in history by winning a gold medal in the men’s high jump T64 final at the Paris Paralympics 2024. With a personal best of 2.08m, Praveen not only claimed his second Paralympic medal but also set a new Asian record. This marks a significant achievement for the 21-year-old, who previously secured a silver medal at the Tokyo Paralympics in 2021 with a jump of 2.07m. His performance has now placed him alongside Sharad Kumar and Mariyappan Thangavelu, making him the third Indian to win a medal in high jump at the Paris Paralympics.

Praveen started the final with immense confidence, skipping the initial heights of 1.80m and 1.85m, choosing to begin his campaign at 1.89m. He easily cleared this height on his first attempt, alongside Great Britain’s Jonathan Broom-Edwards and Poland’s Maciej Lepiato. With the competition heating up, Praveen effortlessly cleared 1.93m and 1.97m, keeping pace with his top competitors.
As the athletes moved to 2.00m, Praveen found himself in a three-way tie for first place with Uzbekistan’s Temurbek Giyazov and Poland’s Maciej Lepiato, as all three athletes cleared the bar on their first attempts. Meanwhile, Derek Loccident of the USA failed to clear 1.89m and 2.00m, which placed him in fourth.
At 2.03m, Praveen took the lead, clearing the height with ease, while his rivals faltered. Giyazov and Lepiato both failed in their first attempts, giving Praveen a crucial advantage. Derek Loccident, after failing earlier, managed to clear 2.06m on his final attempt, momentarily taking the lead. However, Praveen responded by clearing 2.06m on his first try, pushing Loccident back into second place and assuring himself a medal when Giyazov failed to clear the same height.
The deciding moment came at 2.08m. Praveen, already in the lead, broke his own personal best and set a new Asian record by clearing the bar on his first attempt. Derek Loccident was unable to match him, failing in his attempt as his back touched the bar. This secured Praveen's victory and crowned him the gold medalist.
With his 2.08m jump, Praveen not only improved his own personal record but also set a new benchmark for Asian athletes in the T64 category. His triumph at the Paris Paralympics adds another gold medal to India’s tally, showcasing his incredible talent and dedication to the sport. Praveen’s win follows his silver at the Tokyo Paralympics and further cements his status as one of India’s top Paralympic athletes.
Following Praveen Kumar’s sensational victory, several prominent figures took to Twitter to express their admiration and joy:
“Congratulations to Praveen Kumar for scaling new heights and winning a Gold in the Men's High Jump T64 at the #Paralympics2024! His determination and tenacity have brought glory to our nation. India is proud of him!" India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi tweeted.
