President hails Bindra for striking gold

New Delhi, Aug 11 (UNI) President Pratibha Patil congratulated Abhinav Bindra for winning gold medal in the 10-metre air rifle event at the Beijing Olympics today.

Bindra won the first individual gold medal in the Olympics for India. The last Olympic gold for the country came in 1980 in hockey.

The-25-year-old shooter shot an overall score 700.5 which included 596 points in the qualifying round and 104.5 points in the final round to edge past Athens Olympics' gold medallist Zhu Qinan (699.7) of China who won the silver.

Finland's Henri Hakkinen finished third with 699.4 points.
