Pro Wrestling League Season 5 Impact On Indian Wrestling And Gonda Results
The Pro Wrestling League influence spilled strongly into the domestic arena, as several PWL Season 5 grapplers produced standout results at the Senior Open Ranking wrestling tournament in Gonda, held from May 10-12, 2026. Their medals kept those wrestlers in the race for India’s squads for the upcoming World Championships and Commonwealth Championships.
The Gonda ranking event carried extra weight because medallists gained access to national selection trials. Performances by PWL athletes underlined how regular high-level bouts against domestic and overseas rivals have sharpened skills. The league’s fifth season again showed its value as a key step between local competition and major global championships.

Many PWL Season 5 wrestlers climbed the podium with decisive wins, highlighting depth built through the league. These displays followed earlier international success by the same group, creating a link between franchise competition and results abroad. Their dominance in Gonda suggested that the Pro Wrestling League continues to strengthen India’s broader high-performance wrestling system.
In men’s freestyle, PWL talent controlled several weight categories. Sagar, who wrestled for UP Dominators, captured gold in the 57kg class with strong all-round form. Maharashtra Kesari representative Yash Tushir ruled the 74kg division, putting together a sequence of one-sided victories that pushed Tushir forward as a leading contender for national team selection.
Tushir’s title in Gonda also closed a difficult chapter. The former World Junior bronze medallist last represented India internationally at the Asian Championships two years earlier. A stretch of knee, shoulder and toe injuries kept Tushir on the sidelines, followed by six months of rehabilitation. In Gonda, Tushir beat five opponents convincingly to seal gold and revive global ambitions.
Tigers of Mumbai Dangal wrestler Naveen added another success story for the Pro Wrestling League by winning the 79kg freestyle gold medal. Established Indian name Deepak Punia, who turned out for Maharashtra Kesari in PWL Season 5, topped the 92kg category and collected another gold, further increasing Punia’s already significant career medal tally.
The women’s draw also featured familiar PWL faces. Delhi Dangal Warriors grappler Anjali secured silver in the 62kg category after a series of composed performances. That podium finish boosted Anjali’s position before the national coaching staff chooses squads for upcoming international assignments, confirming that the Pro Wrestling League pipeline extends strongly into women’s wrestling.

The league’s administrators viewed these domestic achievements as confirmation of its broader role. “By bringing together Olympians, international stars, established Indian wrestlers and emerging prospects under one competitive structure, the league has continued to play a major role in the development of wrestling in the country,” said Mr. Akhil Gupta, CEO & Promoter, PWL.
PWL Season 5 had already delivered a strong international footprint before the Gonda results. The season’s return earlier in 2026 inspired several Indian and overseas participants to post notable finishes at major global tournaments in the following months. Those foreign and continental medals strengthened the link between franchise competition and success beyond India.
Held at the Noida Indoor Stadium in January, PWL Season 5 featured six franchises: Tigers of Mumbai Dangal, Haryana Thunders, Maharashtra Kesari, UP Dominators, Punjab Royals and Delhi Dangal Warriors. The Pro Wrestling League brought leading domestic and international wrestlers into a single Olympic-style format, with Haryana Thunders finally claiming the Season 5 title.
India’s largest Olympic-style wrestling league, Pro Wrestling League has grown alongside national wrestling bodies and national team plans. PWL wrestlers have secured 11 of India’s 17 medals at the Senior Asian Wrestling Championships, underlining the league’s importance as a pathway. The strong showing in Gonda suggested this influence is likely to remain central to Indian wrestling preparation.
