PSPB lose men's team event, clinches women's title

New Delhi, Aug 26 (UNI) Defending champion PSPB bowed down to the onslaught from the Railways in the men section, while their women compatriots defeated Banks' Sports Board (BSB) to clinch the team title in the 37th All India Inter Institutional Table Tennis Championships here today.

Railways riding on a fine display from Amal Raj, RSPB scored a 3-1 emphatic victory over defending champions PSPB.

In the first match of the day, Commonwealth gold medalist Achanta Sharath Kamal of PSB defeated RSPB's Sourav Chakraborty 3-0 (6-11, 3-11, 6-11), while A Amal Raj equalised the scoresheet for Railways, scalping Subhajit Saha 3-0 (11-6,11-3,13-11) in the next match.

From there onwards it was all Railways as Anirban Nandi extended his winning streak in the championship beating former national champion Soumyadeep Roy 3-1 (11-7, 13-15, 11-7, 11-9).

Amal Raj then settled the encounter in Railway's favour with some spectacular display on the board to overcome Sharath Kamal's chalenge 3-2 (5-11, 11-7, 11-9, 11-13, 11-8).

However, there was something to cheer for PSPB in the team championship today, as their women paddlers outclassed BSB 3-1 to register the title in their name.

BSB's Mamta Prabhu could not repeat her group stage winning performance against Poulomi Ghatak and Mouma Das today, as she bowed down fighting against both of them.

Mamta lost her first match against Mouma 3-2 (11-5, 4-11, 5-11, 11-9, 11-7), while Poulomi defeated her in the next encounter 3-2 (2-11, 11-7, 12-10, 4-11, 12-10).

Poulomi also beat Swetha Kumaravel of BSB 3-0 (11-2, 11-4, 11-5) in another encounter of the final.

The lone match-winner for BSB was N Arul Selvi, who defeated won the third match of the encounter defeating K Shamini 3-2 (9-11, 2-11, 11-5, 11-6, 9-11).
