Punjab, Goa, Assam and Mizoram in semi finals of Sub Junior Champ

Hoshiarpur, Oct 2 (UNI) Punjab will meet Goa while Assam pitted against Mizoram in the semi-finals of the 31st Sub-Junior National Football Championship-2008 for Mir Iqbal Hussain Trophy.

Playing at the Principal Harbhajan Stadium in Mahilpur today, Punjab maintained their all-win record as they finished the Group B quarter-final league after beating Mizoram 2-0 in their third encounter. Punjab had earlier defeated Delhi 6-1 and Meghalaya 3-1. Punjab secured nine points to top their group.

In the second match of the same group Meghalaya rallied to overcome Delhi 2-1 to complete their quarter-final league programme with two victories and one defeat. They were runners-up in their group with six points. Meghalaya finished third with one win and two losses. Winless Delhi were fourth without any point.

Watched by a sizable crowd, the first match to decide the winners and runners-up of Group B between Punjab and Mizoram started at fast pace. The Punjab players were more superior in tackling and passing, consequently had possession of the ball most of the time.

Hosts Punjab forged ahead as Surinderjit unleashed a sizling 25-yard free kick which landed in the second post in the 13th minute. The Mizoram strikers mounted relentless pressure towards the end of the first half but were unable to equalise.

In the second half too, Punjab dominated the initial stages and Rajbir Singh for the host again through a beautiful header off a flag kick making it 2-0. The Mizoram players made valiant attack but a goal eluded them.

The second match of group B to decide the 3rd and 4th positions was evenly balanced. Delhi opened the account through Michael in the 20th minute. Meghalaya were however able to equalise through Sujlvit in the 42nd minute.

In the second half Marboh scored for Meghalaya in the 64th minute, making it 2-1 for the North East state.
