Punjab women claim overall trophy

Jalandhar, Feb 17 (UNI) Punjab clinched the overall trophy in the National Sports Festival for Women in Group I at Madurai, Group II at Thane and Group III at the Surjit Hockey Stadium here, today.

Punjab and Tamil Nadu were tied with 20 points each. However, the hosts were declared overall champion as both won two gold each, but silvers played the decider role as Punjab won two and Tamil Nadu got one. The third place went to Delhi with 19 points.

Punjab also won the overall championship in Group III with 15 points. West Bengal were runners-up with six points while Haryana and Chattisgarh were declared third with five points each.

Punjab got two gold in gymnastics and kho-kho, one silver in hockey and one bronze in basketball. West Bengal captured silver in kho kho and gymnastics. Haryana and Chattisgarh got gold in hockey and basketball, respectively.

Haryana blanked Punjab by 6-0 in hockey final. Chandigarh defeated Uttar Pradesh by 3-2 for the third position.

Proper coordination among Simar Kaur, Sukhwinder Kaur, Salma and Parminder paved the way for Punjab to win gold in kho-kho by defeating West Bengal by 19-12. Karnataka got bronze defeating Delhi by 7-2 and one turn.

In the basketball final match, Chattisgarh proved their supremacy against Delhi who won the final by 57-47. Punjab got the third place by defeating Maharashtra 45-22.

In gymnastics, Meenakshi of Punjab won five gold, including the team championship. In balancing beam, Meenakshi bagged gold with 13.70 points. Nagender also from Punjab won the silver with 12.70 points and Amita of Delhi got bronze with 12.20 points.

In floor exercise, Meenakshi claimed gold with 14.10 points and Sarabjit of Punjab won the silver with 12.30 points whereas Amita from Delhi got bronze with 12.15 points.

Punjab Minister for Sports and Youth Services Gulzar Singh Ranike distributed the prizes. Dr Daljit Singh Cheema, Advisor to Chief Minister Punjab, was the guest of honour on the occasion.
