In a stunning display of skill and teamwork, the Ahmedabad Defenders commenced the third season of the RuPay Prime Volleyball League with a notable victory against the Chennai Blitz, right on their home ground at the Jawaharlal Nehru Indoor Stadium, Chennai.
The match, which took place on Thursday, February 15th, 2024, saw the Defenders, who are the reigning champions, secure a win in straight sets with scores of 15-10, 15-11, and 15-12. Muthusamy Appavu's exceptional performance earned him the title of Player of the Match, underscoring his pivotal role in the team’s success.

The beginning of the match was not as favourable for the Ahmedabad Defenders, with the duo of Leandro Jose and Akhin GS initially putting the hosts in a strong position. However, the game's dynamics shifted dramatically following strategic advice from the Defenders' coach, Dragan Mihailović.
Ilya Burau stepped up brilliantly in the absence of Danial Moatazedi, delivering powerful smashes that put the Blitz on the back foot. Moreover, Max Senica's serving prowess coupled with the Chennai team's unforced errors significantly contributed to the Defenders' advantage.
Under the leadership of Muthusamy Appavu, the Ahmedabad Defenders showcased a masterclass in volleyball strategy. Appavu’s ability to distribute the ball evenly among his teammates kept the opposition guessing, disrupting Chennai Blitz's defensive setups.
Despite a brief moment where the Defenders seemed to lose their rhythm, a swift and strategic play involving Appavu and Angamuthu secured a critical point, closing any opportunity for the Blitz to capitalize.
While Leandro Jose of Chennai Blitz managed to score points, the defensive efforts of Nandagopal and Angamuthu for Ahmedabad ensured control over the game's flow, leading to a decisive victory in straight sets. This win not only highlighted the Defenders' cohesive team play but also reaffirmed their status as formidable champions of the league.
Bengaluru Torpedoes began their campaign with a 16-14, 14-16, 15-13, 15-10 win over the Kolkata Thunderbolts in the second match of the evening. Thomas Heptinstall was named Player of the Match.
Rahul delivered his super serve special as Kolkata took early control. Skipper Ashwal Rai joined the party and Bengaluru found little answers for Kolkata's aggressive serves. But coach David Lee showcased his tactical mindset, switching play to Srajan, who brought Bengaluru back with powerful serves. Showcasing his magic along the lines, Heptinstall nudged Torpedoes marginally ahead.
Kolkata turned to Vinit Rai, who served up solid gameplay to turn the tables again. The passing from Kolkata improved as the game went on, while Torpedoes hurt themselves with unforced errors. The topsy-turvy battle turned into a contest between the outside hitters with Vinit going against Heptinstall.
Coach David's high-risk, high-reward strategy paid rewards as Heptinstall made the most of his height advantage, splitting the gap between two Kolkata blockers. Vinit continued to remain a threat in Kolkata's corner, despite blockers Srajan and Mujeeb trying to block attacks from the middle.
Onur Cukur added more spark to Kolkata's attacks with brilliant passing. But Torpedoes maintained their discipline in defence, and with a thrilling super point, picked a stunning win.
