Norris Dismisses Verstappen's Title Claim Ahead Of Qatar Grand Prix

Ahead of the Qatar Grand Prix, Lando Norris refutes Max Verstappen's claim that he would have won the title earlier in a McLaren. Both drivers reflect on their competitive season and friendships despite on-track clashes.

Lando Norris has dismissed Max Verstappen's assertion that he could have secured the Formula One title earlier this year if he had been driving for McLaren. Verstappen clinched his fourth consecutive championship at the Las Vegas Grand Prix, finishing just ahead of Norris in fifth place. This victory made him the fifth driver to achieve four consecutive titles, joining Michael Schumacher, Sebastian Vettel, and Lewis Hamilton.

Verstappen has won eight races this season, five more than Norris. However, if he doesn't win another race, he will have the fewest victories for a champion since 2012 when Vettel won with only five wins. Verstappen suggested that he would have claimed the title sooner in Norris' car. This comment followed McLaren chief Zak Brown's claim that Verstappen could only win with the fastest car.

Norris Responds to Verstappen's Title Comments

Norris responded to Verstappen's comments by saying, "He should start in comedy or something! He can say whatever he wants." He added that while Verstappen is talented, his claims are not true. "If there was no Red Bull, yeah, even I could have won," Norris remarked. Despite their on-track rivalry, Norris maintains a good relationship with Verstappen.

This weekend's race at Lusail International Circuit is crucial for McLaren as they aim for their first constructors' title since 1998. If they finish with a 45-point lead over Red Bull and Ferrari, they will secure victory. However, Norris believes Mercedes will be tough competition after their strong performance in Las Vegas.

Norris and Verstappen have had several intense battles this season in Austria, Austin, and Mexico City. Although Norris hasn't yet secured a world title, his 12 podium finishes in 2024 demonstrate his potential for future success. He is currently eighth in McLaren's all-time podium list and could match Jenson Button with another top-three finish in Qatar.

Despite their competitive clashes on the track, Norris insists that his friendship with Verstappen remains intact. "There were some tough moments," Norris said, "but we are still good friends." He expressed respect for what Verstappen has achieved and noted that their camaraderie remains strong.

Mercedes' Strong Form

Mercedes arrives in Qatar following a one-two finish in Las Vegas. George Russell aims to build on his recent victory and add to his three career wins. Russell finished fourth last year but hopes to reach the podium this time alongside teammate Lewis Hamilton.

Russell has outperformed Hamilton in qualifying sessions 37 times and finished ahead in half of their races together (33). Mercedes seeks to achieve two F1 doubles this year for the first time since 2020 and aims to reach 300 podiums in their history.

Verstappen's Record-Breaking Potential

Max Verstappen leads the drivers' standings with impressive statistics: most race wins (11), pole positions (nine), podiums (15), and points (110). He is close to becoming only the third driver to surpass 3,000 career points. If either Verstappen or Sergio Perez secures the fastest lap in Qatar, Red Bull will join an elite group of teams with 100 fastest laps.

The duo will compete in their 90th race as Red Bull teammates this weekend. They are among a select group of pairings who have reached this milestone.

Current Championship Standings

The current standings show Max Verstappen leading with 403 points for Red Bull. Lando Norris follows with 340 points for McLaren. Charles Leclerc from Ferrari holds third place with 319 points.

In the constructors' standings, McLaren leads with 608 points while Ferrari trails closely at 584 points. Red Bull sits third with 555 points as Mercedes rounds out the top four at 425 points.
