Raigad girls clinch thriller against Nashik in state basketball meet

Mumbai, May 13 (UNI) Raigad girls kicked off their campaign with a thrilling 21-20 win over Nashik in the 59th Maharashtra State Inter-District Basketball Championship, organised by the Greater Mumbai Central District Basketball Association, that got underway at the Naigaum Police Ground, Parel here today.

Raigad led 11-10 at half as a gallant Nashik ran them close right through. Shruthi Bhange top-scored for Raigad with nine points, while Priyanka More's 8 was the best for Nashik.

In another girls' tie, Mumbai Central overcame a determined challenge before surging to an exciting 37-20 win over Sangli.

Sangli kept pace in the first two quarters, allowing Mumbai Central a slender 13-12 lead at half time, before losing their way in the latter half.

Among the boys Nashik and Raigad got off to winning starts with convincing victories.

Thirty-two boys' and 22 girls' under-18 teams will feature in the league-cum-knock out competition that concludes on May 17.

There are 10 Pools in the boys' section and seven in the girls.

The winners of each Pool will qualify for the knock out.

The championship, being organised under the auspices of the Maharashtra State Basketball Association, will serve as a selection for the Maharashtra team for the Junior Nationals to be held in Bhilwara, Rajasthan from May 25 to June 1.

Results: BOYS: Nashik 49 (Rahul D 15, V Prashant 10) bt Jalgaon 16. HT: 27-6. Raigad 50 (Jayant Shinde 13, Nikhilesh Nimbalkar 10) bt Chandrapur 17.

GIRLS: Raigad 21 (Shruthi Bhange 9) bt Nashik 20 (Priyanka More 8).

HT: 11-10. Mumbai Central 37 (Aishwarya Shetty 19) bt Sangli 20 (Hema Thakkar 9). HT: 13-12. Satara 26 (Gauri P 6, Bhakli N 6) bt Jalgaon 0. HT: 12-0.
