Rakesh Nidagundi Set for Asian Para Games Debut After World Championships Silver

Vijayi Bharat Foundation (VBF) para shooter Rakesh Nidagundi is preparing to make his Asian Para Games debut in Aichi-Nagoya, Japan, where he will represent India in the Men's R1 10m Air Rifle Standing (SH1) event on October 19, 2026.

The 38-year-old from Hubballi, Karnataka, heads into the continental competition on the back of an impressive performance at the Changwon 2026 World Shooting Para Sport (WSPS) World Championships, where he secured a silver medal as part of India's R1 team.

The achievement marked a significant milestone for Indian para shooting, with the country winning its first-ever team medals in rifle at the Para Shooting World Championships. Nidagundi will now look to carry that momentum into his maiden Asian Para Games appearance and challenge for a podium finish.

From graphic design to international shooting

Nidagundi's journey into shooting began unexpectedly in 2017 when he was assigned to design promotional material for a shooting academy. What started as a professional assignment gradually introduced him to a sport that would eventually become his calling.

After returning to shooting following the COVID-19 lockdown, he began competing in 2021. Consistent performances at domestic competitions, including the Khelo India Games, helped him progress from a newcomer to the sport to an international-level competitor.

Nidagundi currently trains at VBF's High-Performance Centre in Ahmedabad under coach Jeevan Lal Rai, whose guidance has played an important role in his development.

Speaking about his Asian Para Games debut, Nidagundi said representing India was a defining moment in his sporting career. He highlighted the pride and responsibility associated with wearing the national colours and credited his coach and VBF for supporting his journey.

With several of Asia's leading para shooters expected to compete in Japan, Nidagundi said his focus would be on trusting his preparation, remaining composed under pressure and challenging for the gold medal.

Coach confident ahead of Asian Para Games

Coach Jeevan Lal Rai expressed confidence in Nidagundi's progress, pointing to his commitment to training and the valuable international experience gained from the World Championships.

According to Rai, preparations have focused on refining the shooter's technique, improving consistency and strengthening his ability to perform under pressure.

While acknowledging the demanding nature of the competition in Japan, the coach believes Nidagundi has the ability to challenge strong opponents if he executes his plans with precision and maintains his composure.
