Mumbai, Oct 24 (UNI) Khandu Rangnekar XI moved into a strong position after taking a 49-run first innings lead over Vijay Merchant XI on the second day of the four-day 22nd Sportstar Trophy Under-19 MCA Selection Trial Tournament at the Karnataka SA ground, Cross Maidan here today.
Khandu Rangnekar XI then reduced their rivals to 143-5 in the second innings.
Rangnekar XI medium-pacer Swapnil More (3-20) and left-arm spinner Ankit Mithawala (2-31) struck at regular intervals, reducing Merchant XI to 44-4 at one stage before a 86-run stand between Pratik Denge (24) and Siddhesh Kinlekar took them to respectability.
Kinlekar, coming in at number four, battled alone for 190 minutes, remaining unbeaten on 82 when play was called off for the day.
Pushkaraj Chavan, captain of Vijay Merchant XI and left-arm spinner, has been asked to join the Mumbai U-19 squad at Rajkot, reducing Merchant XI to 10 players on the second day, apart from weakening the bowling. He was the main wicket-taker with four for 22 in the first innings.
In the other match, Vijay Manjrekar XI, resuming at 140-4, went on to score 222 against Dattu Phadkar XI, the main run-getters being Gaurav Chavan 55 and Vinit Dhulap 28 at Elf Vengsarkar Academy Oval.
In reply, Phadkar XI were at one stage 130-1, with opener Rohan Tondulkar (53) and one drop Swapnil Pradhan (56) putting on 111 runs in 29.1 overs, handling the bowling with competence before Manjrekar XI spinners Gaurav Suryavanshi (2-53) and Vinit Dhulap (2-45) struck.
Phadkar XI struggled to 166-7 at stumps, still 56 runs short of first innings lead.
