Darko Rajakovic Secures Multiyear Extension As Raptors Stand Firm

The Toronto Raptors have given head coach Darko Rajakovic a new multiyear contract extension, confirmed on Thursday, shortly after the team completed a major trade to bring Kawhi Leonard back from the Los Angeles Clippers in a high-profile move.

Rajakovic, a 47-year-old Serbian coach, has led Toronto for two full seasons and guided the Raptors back into the play-offs last campaign, ending the team’s post-season absence that stretched back to 2022 with an improved regular-season record.

Across those first two years, Rajakovic posted a combined 55-109 record as Toronto reshaped the roster, then oversaw a 46-36 finish last season. That run secured the fifth seed in the Eastern Conference before a seven-game first-round loss to the Cleveland Cavaliers.

Rajakovic originally arrived in June 2023, when the Raptors dismissed Nick Nurse. Nurse had coached Toronto to the franchise’s only NBA title in 2019, a season highlighted by Leonard’s performances and NBA Finals MVP award during the team’s championship push.

The franchise moved on Tuesday to reacquire Leonard, a seven-time All-Star, from the Clippers. Leonard now returns to the organisation where Leonard previously led the team to the 2019 championship, reuniting with a fan base that watched that earlier title run.

The renewed commitment to Rajakovic, combined with Leonard’s arrival from Los Angeles, signals Toronto’s intent to compete again in the Eastern Conference, building on last season’s progress after the earlier championship era under Nick Nurse in 2019.
