Ravens Drop Justin Tucker Amid Accusations and Performance Slump

Ravens Drop Justin Tucker Amid Accusations and Performance Slump: The Baltimore Ravens have officially released kicker Justin Tucker — a move the team insists is a “football decision,” but one that arrives amidst a troubling backdrop of sexual misconduct allegations and the worst season of Tucker’s otherwise stellar career.

Here’s a breakdown of what happened, why it matters, and what might come next for one of the NFL’s most recognizable specialists.

Ravens Drop Justin Tucker Amid Accusations and Performance Slump

Who Is Justin Tucker?

Justin Tucker, 35, is widely considered one of the greatest kickers in NFL history. An undrafted free agent out of Texas in 2012, Tucker spent all 13 of his NFL seasons with the Ravens, becoming the league’s all-time leader in field goal accuracy (89.1%).

He is a seven-time Pro Bowler and five-time first-team All-Pro, known for his consistency, long-range leg, and game-winning moments. But his legacy is now under scrutiny both for off-field allegations and a steep decline in performance.

What Are the Allegations?

Tucker is accused by 16 women of inappropriate behavior during massage sessions at eight high-end spas in the Baltimore area between 2012 and 2016. These allegations include sexual misconduct, though no formal charges have been filed.

The NFL launched an investigation earlier this year. Tucker has denied the allegations publicly on two separate occasions. Team president Sashi Brown initially stated that no decision would be made on Tucker's future until that investigation concluded — yet the team parted ways before the league released any findings.

What Did the Ravens Say?

General manager Eric DeCosta released a statement on Monday acknowledging the difficulty of the decision:

“Sometimes football decisions are incredibly difficult, and this is one of those instances. Considering our current roster, we have made the tough decision to release Justin Tucker. Justin created many significant and unforgettable moments in Ravens history. His reliability, focus, drive, resilience and extraordinary talent made him one of the league\'s best kickers for over a decade. We are grateful for Justin\'s many contributions while playing for the Ravens. We sincerely wish him and his family the very best in this next chapter of their lives.”

Head coach John Harbaugh echoed a similar sentiment when asked about the team’s kicking plans, noting that “every decision we make has to be based on football,” while referencing factors such as salary cap constraints and recent draft investments.

Why Now?

The timing of the release suggests the allegations played a role, even if the Ravens publicly framed it around performance and roster decisions. The team recently selected Arizona kicker Tyler Loop in the sixth round of the NFL Draft. Loop kicked at the team’s rookie minicamp Sunday, while Tucker had still been working out at the facility in the weeks prior.

From a performance standpoint, Tucker is coming off his worst statistical season:

  • 22 of 30 field goals made (73.3%) — a career low
  • Just 11 of 19 from 40+ yards
  • Missed more long-range kicks in 2024 than any other season

By releasing him, the Ravens could also gain $4.2 million in salary cap space if they designate Tucker as a post-June 1 cut, spreading $7.5 million in dead money over two seasons.

What’s Next for Tucker?

With an ongoing NFL investigation and public pressure mounting, Tucker’s next move remains unclear. While no legal action has yet materialized, the allegations — combined with his on-field decline — may complicate any attempt to sign with another team.

If cleared by the league, he could still be an asset to a franchise in need of a veteran kicker. But reputation and timing may significantly limit opportunities.

The Bigger Picture

Tucker's release is another flashpoint in the NFL's evolving stance on off-field conduct. It highlights the challenge teams face in balancing legal ambiguity with public accountability, and it forces fans to reckon with how allegations — even without legal action — can shape a player’s legacy.

For now, Justin Tucker’s story is one of both historic achievement and personal controversy — a reminder that in today’s NFL, the field is only part of the equation.
