Red Bull Issues Apology To Kimi Antonelli After Controversial Norris Overtake Comments

Red Bull have issued an apology to Kimi Antonelli after implying that the Mercedes driver intentionally let Lando Norris overtake him during the Qatar Grand Prix. This season marks the first time since 2010 that more than two drivers have a chance to win the Formula One championship with only one race left.

Norris leads with 408 points and can secure his first world title with a podium finish. Max Verstappen trails by 12 points, while Piastri is just four points further back. Verstappen improved his chances of retaining the title by winning in Qatar, finishing ahead of Piastri and Carlos Sainz, with Norris in fourth.

The controversy arose when Norris overtook Antonelli on the second-to-last lap, gaining two crucial points in the title race. Red Bull's team members made contentious remarks about this move. Gianpiero Lambiase, Verstappen’s race engineer, claimed over team radio that Antonelli had moved aside for Norris.

Helmut Marko, Red Bull's motorsport advisor, also suggested that Antonelli had waved Norris into fourth place. These comments led to Antonelli receiving over 1,000 abusive messages online. Mercedes defended their young driver against these accusations.

Red Bull later apologised officially, stating: "Comments made before the end of and immediately after the Qatar GP suggesting that Mercedes driver Kimi Antonelli had deliberately allowed Lando Norris to overtake him are clearly incorrect." They clarified that replay footage showed Antonelli losing control momentarily, allowing Norris to pass.

Toto Wolff's Reaction

Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff was particularly upset by Marko’s remarks. He expressed his frustration after the race: "We are fighting for P2 in the constructors' championship, which is important for us. Kimi is fighting for a potential P3."

"How brainless can you be to even say something like this? It annoys me because I'm annoyed with the race itself, how it went. I'm annoyed with the mistake at the end. I'm annoyed with other mistakes, and then hearing such nonsense blows my mind," Wolff added.

Championship Standings

Mercedes currently hold second place in the team standings with 459 points but trail McLaren significantly. McLaren have already secured the championship title with 800 points on their tally. The F1 season will conclude at the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix on Sunday.

The final race promises intense competition as drivers vie for top positions in both individual and team standings. The outcome will determine whether Norris secures his first championship or if Verstappen retains his title once again.
