Resilient Kidney Donor Sushma Singh Triumphs on the Running Track

Running is regarded as one of the simplest ways to maintain good health, and many people in the community use it as a source of inspiration and freedom. Sushma Singh, a New Delhi-based runner, enjoys her runs and likes to push herself each time.

"Last year, I began running about 2-3 km before gradually extending my distance. I feel like I can handle my life's challenges easily since running makes me so strong, she remarked.

Sushma raced a 10K in 2022, more than 20 years after her last time on the track. "That was such a great feeling to complete a 10K in under an hour. I was in a happy place. I made the decision to aim higher on that day, she stated.

But, there were concerns about Sushma's ability to resume jogging in the manner she desired after giving her husband a kidney earlier this year.

"I was in the recovery period from the Fourth of July to the Third of September, and the doctor told that you can only go walking if you are able to, and that you should not do any other activity, including weight training, running, or jogging at all."

She returned to the track gradually because she was determined to run. "I didn't even consider for a split second that I wouldn't be able to run again. Following my recovery, I resumed running, and I will unquestionably go above 5 kilometres. I signed up for the 10K run at the Vedanta Delhi Half Marathon this year, and I am confident that I will finish the course.

While Sushma is happy to be running once more, she is also busy getting ready for the Vedanta Delhi Half Marathon, which will be held for the 18th time. Her daughter, who is 11 years old, will be in charge of the crowd support.

"Harmilan Bains was jogging with the Indian flag when we were watching the Asian Games. My kid also said she wanted to watch me run in that manner. She has faith in my ability, and I told her I will make her and India proud in that emotional moment. Children pick up skills from watching the behaviours of their elders, and she is picking up skills from me," Sushma said.

On Sunday, October 15, the World Athletics Gold Label Road Race, with a USD 268,000 prize purse, will begin at Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium. On the day of the event, as many as 111 competitors will celebrate their birthdays.

At this year's Vedanta Delhi Half Marathon, Indu Bala Agarwal (84 years old) will be the oldest female runner, and Krishnapal Singh Tomar (88 years old) will be the oldest male runner. At the Vedanta Delhi Half Marathon, Hope Teresa David (12 years old - Champions With Disabilities) and Suhaani Rajvanshi (12 years old - Great Delhi Run) will be the youngest females and Dushyant Kumar (12 years old - Great Delhi Run) the youngest men.

Title sponsor Vedanta Ltd will continue to support the campaign of #RunForZeroHunger during the marathon, strengthening the running movement in Delhi for consecutive years. The Nand Ghar project, the Indian conglomerate's major social impact programme, would give a child a healthy meal for every kilometre run.
