Rest of India batter Mumbai to win Irani Trophy

Rajkot, Oct 9: Rest of India registered an emphatic nine-wicket victory over Ranji champion Mumbai on the penultimate day of their five-Day Irani Cup played at the Madhavrao Scindia Cricket stadium today.

Requiring 88 to win, the Rest of India completed the formality by losing one wicket, that of Akash Chopra. Parthiv Patel and skipper Mohd Kaif remained not out on 60 and 22 runs respectively. Akash Chopra made 7.

Rest of India etched its name on the trophy for the 19th time out of the 43 editions.

Resuming at the overnight score of 98 for six, Ranji champions Mumbai were all out for 106 runs shortly after the resumption of play today. Rest of India, by virtue of their first innings lead of 19 runs, needed just 88 runs to win which they did with ease losing only the wicket of Akash Chopra.

Mumbai played badly in their second essay on a pitch which offered little assitance to the bowlers. Mumbai added just 8 runs to the overnight score, losing all the four wickets in a span of sixteen minutes of play.

Munaf Patel struck in his first over of the morning with his fiery pace and bowled Wasim Zaffer. He could only add four runs to overnight score of 21. The lone hope for Mumbai, went cheaply.

The other medium pacer, Ishant Sharma, struck twice -- removing I Abdulla and Omkar Gaurav. Both the batsmen were back to the pavilion without adding any runs to the team's total and out for naughts.

Munaf Patel completed the formality by removing R Verma who was caught behind for duck. Ajit Agarkar at the other end remained not out for 11.

Speedster Munaf Patel regained the rhythm and scalped five wickets for 25 runs while Ishant Sharma took three for 31.

Rest of India in-form opener Parthiv Patel, who continued his good job with the bat, scored an unbeaten 60 in the second innings that had ten well-timed boundaries. In his first essay, Parthiv Patel had made 179. Manoj Tiwary had made 130.
