Rio Olympics: Unique celebration at Singapore's Changi Airport as Joseph Schooling beats Phelps

Rio de Janeiro, Aug 13: It was a historic night (August 12) for Singapore at Rio Olympics 2016 as Joseph Isaac Schooling stopped US legend Michael Phelps to win gold in 100m butterfly event. And Singapore's Changi Airport celebrated it in a unique way.

21-year-old Schooling clocked 50.39 seconds to edge out Phelps in the 100m butterfly contest in Rio de Janeiro on Friday. With this, the Singaporean denied Phelps his 23rd Olympic gold. The American had to settle for silver with 51.14 seconds.

31-year-old Phelps, Chad le Clos (South Africa) and Laszlo Cseh (Hungary) all three were tied (51.14 seconds) for second and claimed a silver each.

Schooling's historic feat was celebrated across his country and Singapore's Changi Airport announced the arrival of gold medal on its Flight Information Display System (FIDS) reserved only to give real time updates of aircraft landings.

"Announcing the arrival of Singapore's first Olympic gold medal. Congratulations to Joseph Isaac Schooling, the world's 100m butterfly champion! From all of us at Changi Airport, thank you for making us proud. Majulah Singapura!," Changi Airport posted on its Facebook page with the display board image showing this at the top, "Flight SG2016, Time 50.39, From Joseph Schooling, Terminal Gold".

This FB post received more than 19,000 likes and was shared by over 3,080 users.

Many Singaporeans wanted to know when Schooling was returning to the country so that they could be at Changi Airport to welcome him home.

"Let us know when is the return flight of our Singapore Team, am so taking leave to go Changi Airport to welcome them back!!," one Facebook user asked on Changi Airport's page.

After winning gold, Schooling said it was a dream come true to race against his idol. On Twitter, Joseph Schooling was trending.

There was a photo on the social media showing a young Schooling posing next to Phelps in Singapore in 2008.

For Schooling and the whole of Singapore, it was a night to remember.
