Road To UFC Season 2 Opening Round Results: India's Sumit Kumar and Pratap Singh Ousted

The Road To UFC Season 2 opening round concluded with episodes 3 and 4 on Sunday (May 28) at the UFC Performance Institute Shanghai with 16 fighters from Asia advancing to the next round.

Unfortunately, the Indian duo of Rana Rudra Pratap Singh and Sumit Kumar bowed out of their respective weight division tournaments in the opening round in Shanghai.

While Kumar lost by decision in the flyweight bout, Singh lost via stoppage in a bantamweight bout. Both the Indian MMA athletes lost to South Korean opponents.

Episode 1 and Episode 2 of the second season was held on Saturday (May 27) with flyweights and featherweights in action, while Episode 3 and Episode 4 on Sunday (May 28) saw the bantamweights and lightweights collide.

Rei Tsuruya wasted no time taking down Ronal Siahaan in the first flyweight bout, and chained submission attempts until he locked on a kimura early in the second round.

Mark Climaco and Jung Hyun Lee were very competitive, trading strikes and grappling for all three rounds, but Climaco's skillset inched ahead of Lee and earned him the unanimous decision victory.

Jiniushiyue owned Billy Pasulatan with takedowns and ground control until the referee called a halt for unanswered ground and pound giving Ji the TKO win.

Sumit Kumar and Seung Guk Choi didn't let up or give ground in a fast-paced fight, Kumar furious with takedowns and Choi hunting the KO, Choi eventually getting the decision victory on his more technical performance.

RTU Season 2 Featherweight Tournament Recap

In the first featherweight bout, Wuziazibieke Jiahefu manhandled Yizha to the canvas but Yizha stole the opportunity to snap on an armbar in the very first round.

Keisuke Sasu was relentless in his takedowns against Sang Won Kim, but it was all for naught in the second round when Kim landed a knockout punch.

Yibugele and Koya Kanda cage grappled the first round, boxed in the second, and still had energy to chase each other in the third of their entertaining bout in which Kanda edged out the win on the scorecards.

Li Kaiwen and Lu Kai entered the cage with bad intentions, and it was Li Kaiwen who ended them with a barrage of punches in just 1:11 of the first round.

RTU Season 2 Bantamweight Tournament Recap

Shohei Nose came to grapple Xiao Long who wanted to stand and trade in the pocket, and aggression earned Xiao Long the decision win.

Furious cage wrestling between Shuya Kamikubo's relentless shoots and Baergeng Jieleyisi's punishing uppercuts and knees ignited the crowd, with the grinding game of Kamikubo taking the split decision via the scorecards.

Daermisi Zhawupasi reversed a big takedown from Eperaim Ginting then made it look easy with a brilliant rear naked choke in just 58 seconds.

Chang Ho Lee made it all one-way traffic against Rana Rudra Pratap Singh with a takedown, control and ground and pound enroute to a TKO.

RTU Season 2 Lightweight Tournament Recap

Sangwook Kim smartly handled the shoots of Kazuma Maruyama to counter and lock in a d'arce submission at the end of the first round.

Rongzhu had the eye of the tiger and TKOed Seong Chan Hong in less than half a round to advance to the semifinals.

Shin Haraguchi made Windri Patilima defend smothering grappling and finished him via ground and pound in the second round.

Bahatebole Batebolati had Won Bin Ki on the back foot for all of round one, and after an illegal strike to the back of the head from Ki in round 2, Bahatebole advanced to the semifinals through Ki's disqualification.

Non-Tournament Bouts

Flyweights Top Noi Kiwram and Nyamjargal Tumendemberel kicked off the opening round of Season 2 as the first bout of the night, and after flying punches and fierce takedowns from both, Tumendemberel left with the split decision win.

Taiyilake Nueraji had the house on his side as he threw heavy leather and fancy sanda kicks at Han Seul Kim, who came back punch for punch until Taiyilake sealed the deal with a left elbow highlight reel KO.

Chris Hofmann and Sang Hoon Yoo made their welterweight bout a slugfest with knockdowns from both, ultimately Yoo getting the better of an exchange in the third round for the TKO victory. Peter Danesoe made a name for himself with a flying knee KO of Kai Xiong in the first round.
