Road To UFC Season 3 Results: Angad Bisht Progresses; Kiran Singh, Priya Sharma Lose Opening Round

India's Angad Bisht moved one step closer to landing a contract at the Ultimate Fighting Championship after a stoppage win over Phlippines' John Dave Almanza in Road To UFC Season 3 at the UFC Performance Institute Shanghai over the weekend.

In the flyweight tournament opener, Almanza looked sharp in his stand up, but Angad was far too strong on the ground and the referee stopped the fight to give him the first round TKO.

Angad will next face another Phlippino in Ruel Panales, who progressed to the semi-final after his Japanese opponent Toki Matsui weighed in over the flyweight limit leading to cancellation of the fight. The next round of RTU 3 will be confirmed soon.

Also progressing in the flyweight tournament was another Indian-origin MMA athlete Kiru Singh Sahota, who reportedly triggered controversy in the lead up to the event after rejecting to hold an Indian flag.

Kiru Singh Sahota, representing the Manchester Top Team, edged out a split decision win over China's Yin Shuai. Volume striker Sahota and well-rounded finisher Yin engaged in a very furious fight that saw the former's sharp punches score more.

Sahota will next face South Korea's DongHoon Choi in the semi-final. The Korean also earned a narrow split decision victory over RTU season 2 finalist Jiniushiyue. Choi traded back and forth punches through three rounds, but top control by Choi after Ji missed a takedown gave him an edge.

Earlier on Saturday (May 18), India's Priya Sharma and Kiran Singh bowed out in the opening round of the women's strawweight tournament following contrasting results.

Highly credentialed Feng Xiaocan was too powerful and skilled for national wushu champion Kiran Singh, finishing her by ground and pound in the first round.

Submission specialist Dong Huaxiang decided to keep the fight standing against well-traveled Priya Sharma and the tactic worked, winning her the unanimous decision on the scorecards
