Houston Rockets Secure Jabari Smith Jr. With Five-Year Contract Extension Worth $122 Million

The Houston Rockets have finalised a five-year, $122 million extension for Jabari Smith Jr., ensuring his presence through the 2030-31 season as they aim for playoff contention.

The Houston Rockets have secured a five-year, $122 million rookie contract extension with Jabari Smith Jr., according to ESPN. This agreement ensures Smith, the third overall pick in the 2022 NBA Draft, remains with the team until the 2030-31 season. The timing coincides with Houston's acquisition of Kevin Durant and precedes the NBA's free agent negotiation period starting Monday night. Official deals will commence on July 6.

Smith's offensive contributions have been inconsistent, yet his athleticism and dual-threat capabilities were crucial for the Rockets last season. The team achieved a 52-30 record and secured the No. 2 seed in the Western Conference. Despite moving to a bench role, Smith maintained over 30 minutes per game, averaging 12.2 points and 7.0 rebounds across 57 games.

Rockets Extend Jabari Smith Jr.'s Contract

In three seasons with Houston, Smith has averaged 13.0 points, 7.5 rebounds, and 1.3 assists per game. Although they faced a first-round playoff exit last season, the Rockets are determined to elevate their status to contenders next season. The Durant trade stands out as a significant move in this direction.

Beyond acquiring Durant, Houston has made other strategic decisions this offseason. They extended contracts for coach Ime Udoka and backup center Steven Adams while retaining key players like Fred VanVleet, JaeSean Tate, Jeff Green, and Aaron Holiday.

The Rockets' recent actions indicate their commitment to building a competitive team for the upcoming season. By securing key players and making strategic acquisitions, they aim to strengthen their position in the league and make a deeper playoff run next year.
