Rory McIlroy is determined to ignore any distractions about his recent struggles in major tournaments as he prepares for the Masters this week. Since his last major win at the 2014 PGA Championship, McIlroy has not secured a victory in his last 38 appearances at golf's top four events. Despite several close calls, including some at Augusta National, McIlroy remains focused on his game.
McIlroy has experienced several near misses at major tournaments. In 2016, a third-round score of five-over-par 77 derailed his chances at Augusta. In 2018, he was just one shot from the lead on the final day but ended tied for fifth after multiple bogeys. Last year, he finished second, three shots behind Scottie Scheffler.

The Northern Irishman also faced heartbreak at the U.S. Open last year. He bogeyed three of the final four holes and missed two crucial four-foot putts, allowing Bryson DeChambeau to overtake him. Despite these setbacks, McIlroy told reporters on Tuesday that he has moved past those moments.
"It's just narratives, it's noise," McIlroy stated during a pre-tournament press conference. "I need to treat this tournament like all the other tournaments that I play throughout the year." He emphasised focusing on his job and blocking out external noise.
A win at the Masters would make McIlroy only the sixth golfer to achieve a career grand slam, joining legends like Gene Sarazen and Tiger Woods. This year, McIlroy has already won twice on the PGA Tour, including victories at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am and the Players Championship.
Reflecting on his experiences, McIlroy shared how he copes with disappointments: "Once you go through those heartbreaks... you wake up the next day and you're like 'yeah, life goes on.'" He believes these experiences have made him more comfortable being vulnerable and laying everything out there.
"I'm feeling good," McIlroy said about his current form. He expressed satisfaction with starting the year with two wins and having a decent performance in Houston recently. His preparation for Augusta included a couple of visits to familiarise himself with conditions.
McIlroy's resilience is evident as he continues to pursue success in major tournaments. His focus remains sharp as he aims for another chance at glory this week at Augusta National.
