Rory McIlroy Leads Masters 2026 After Five-Under 67, Emphasising Focus Yet

Rory McIlroy began his Masters title defence with a five-under-par 67 at Augusta National, joining Sam Burns at the top of the leaderboard after the opening round. The defending champion, aged 36, closed with a steady two-putt par on the 18th green, giving the Northern Irishman an ideal platform for the next three rounds.

That 67 ranks as the third-lowest first round by a defending Masters champion. Only Jordan Spieth in 2016 and Jose Maria Olazabal in 1996, who both posted 66, have started faster while defending the Green Jacket. Despite visiting sand and trees early in the round, McIlroy also recorded a personal best opening score at Augusta since a 65 in 2011.

McIlroy pointed to a relaxed attitude as defending champion as a major reason for the strong scoring. "I feel like I settled into the round really nicely and really quickly. And Ive kept saying all week, there is a certain freedom. Like, if I hit in the trees, its ok, Ill figure it out," McIlroy told Sky Sports after leaving the course.

McIlroy explained that long experience at Augusta National allowed recovery from early errors in bunkers and among the trees. "So I think just wherever I hit it on this golf course, I feel like Ive seen it all over the past 18 years, and I always feel like I can figure it out, get it to the front of the green, make a par and move on. I did that quite a bit on the front nine today and then I started to sort of find my game a bit on the back."

McIlroy later stressed that rhythm, not perfection, guided the round. "I think I swung freely. Even when I was missing tee shots on the front nine, I still kept swinging. I didnt start to get tentative or giddy. I kept swinging away just hoping that sooner or later Ill find, and I did. I started to string some good swings together from the eighth hole, and from then on I played some really good golf. Its a great start. Theres a long way to go. Im right in the tournament and its a lot better than starting from seven behind going into the second round like I was last year. Great start, but cant get ahead of myself. Theres a long way to go, but feeling good with where Im at."

The leading score of 67 left McIlroy tied with Sam Burns, while a group on three-under-par 69, including Kurt Kitayama, Jason Day and Patrick Reed, occupied temporary third place before the late starters finished on Thursday. McIlroy's Ryder Cup team-mate Shane Lowry posted a two-under 70, matching American Xander Schauffele after the first round.

McIlroy leaves the opening day pleased but cautious, aware that Augusta National can change quickly over four days. The defending champion sits in a far stronger position than in 2025, when a seven-shot deficit followed round one, yet continues to stress patience, free swings and course knowledge as the focus for the rest of this Masters week.
