Rory McIlroy has matched Seve Ballesteros' record of six Race to Dubai titles following his win at the DP World Tour Championship. He expressed deep pride in being compared to the legendary golfer and reflected on a challenging year.

Rory McIlroy expressed his pride at being compared to Seve Ballesteros after equalling the Spaniard's record of six Race to Dubai titles. McIlroy clinched the title for the third consecutive year by winning the DP World Tour Championship in Dubai on Sunday. The four-time major champion finished two strokes ahead of Denmark's Rasmus Hojgaard, marking his third victory in this event.

McIlroy shared his admiration for Seve Ballesteros, highlighting the Spaniard's significance to European golf and Ryder Cup players. "Everyone knows what Seve means to European golf and Ryder Cup players," McIlroy told Sky Sports. He added that the European Ryder Cup locker room is filled with quotes from Seve, and they even had a changing room with Seve's shirt from 1995, the last Ryder Cup he played.

Reflecting on his journey throughout the year, McIlroy acknowledged both professional and personal challenges. He narrowly missed out on winning the US Open title to Bryson DeChambeau earlier in 2024. Despite these setbacks, McIlroy expressed satisfaction with how he concluded the year, stating that it felt like a fitting end to 2024.

McIlroy admitted that perseverance was key this year as he faced numerous close calls without securing victories. "I've persevered this year a lot, had close calls, wasn't able to get it done," he said. However, he was pleased with his performance in Dubai and relieved to have held on after a challenging day.

The emotional significance of being mentioned alongside Ballesteros was not lost on McIlroy. "He means so much to European golf and for me to be mentioned in the same breath, I'm very proud," he stated. This achievement underscores McIlroy's resilience and dedication throughout a challenging year.
