Rory McIlroy faces a sizeable task in the final round of the Genesis Invitational, trailing leader Jacob Bridgeman by six shots at Riviera Golf Course. McIlroy sits alone in second place at 13 under par after a third-round 69 on 21 February 2026, while Bridgeman moves clear in pursuit of a first PGA Tour win.
McIlroy has erased a six-stroke gap before, when McIlroy defeated Scottie Scheffler at the 2023 Tour Championship, yet this situation feels more demanding. Bridgeman has dominated across three rounds and appears comfortable, while McIlroy admits the margin is not ideal but still believes the position offers a realistic shot on 22 February 2026.

Bridgeman’s seven-under 64 on Saturday pushed the leader to 19 under overall and created clear daylight. The 24-year-old can set a new 72-hole scoring record at Riviera, with Lanny Wadkins holding the mark at 20 under since 1985. McIlroy’s previous best at the Genesis Invitational was a tie for 10th in 2022, so this season already brings a superior performance.
McIlroy described the mental battle after another testing afternoon on the greens. "I hung in there. I wish I was a couple closer to the lead. It looks like I’ll be in the final group," McIlroy said afterwards. "Hopefully, put a little pressure on Jacob tomorrow. I’ve given myself a chance, and that’s all I can ask for."
Leaderboard positions behind the leading pair remain tight at the Genesis Invitational, with South Africa’s Aldrich Potgieter third at 12 under and Aaron Rai fourth at 11 under. World number one Scheffler returned a five-under 66 in round three, leaving Scheffler at five under for the week and tied for 22nd place heading into Sunday’s play at Riviera.

McIlroy later expanded on how demanding Riviera felt during the third round of the Genesis Invitational. "It was so hard, the greens got so fast, and they’re soft, and they got a little bumpy later on in the day," McIlroy added. "I was proud of myself. I sort of hung in there. I stayed as patient as I could. I wish I was a couple closer to the lead. I’ve given myself a chance. That’s all I can ask for. It’s not as big of a chance as I think I would like. I’d love to win here. I’m going to play my hardest tomorrow and we’ll see what happens."
