Rory McIlroy More Motivated Than Ever After Back-to-Back Masters Wins
Rory McIlroy says the drive to compete is stronger than ever after defending the Masters title last month. The world number two completed the career Grand Slam with a one-shot win over Scottie Scheffler at Augusta National and now targets more major success.
McIlroy quickly returns to competition at the Truist Championship this week, a tournament McIlroy has already won four times. That event leads straight into a demanding run of majors, with McIlroy keen to build on the momentum created by a second green jacket.

The victory at Augusta made McIlroy only the fourth player to retain the Masters title, joining Jack Nicklaus, Nick Faldo and Tiger Woods. By winning, McIlroy also became the sixth golfer to secure the career Grand Slam and the first European to reach that landmark.
McIlroy’s schedule now centres on the major championships. The PGA Championship starts on May 14 at Aronimink, followed by the US Open at Shinnecock on June 18 and The Open at Birkdale on July 16. McIlroy wants more trophies during this stretch, building on recent progress.
| Tournament | Venue | Start date |
|---|---|---|
| Truist Championship | – | – |
| PGA Championship | Aronimink | May 14 |
| US Open | Shinnecock | June 18 |
| The Open | Birkdale | July 16 |
Reflecting on the new season, McIlroy noted the contrast with the previous campaign and how Augusta has changed the outlook. "It [returning to action] feels a lot different [to last year]," said McIlroy, pointing to higher confidence and a renewed sense of purpose.
"I've spoken about this a lot, I felt like winning the Grand Slam was going to be this life-changing thing and in some ways it was, but in other ways I had to remember, 'no, I still have a lot of my career left and I want to keep playing and keep competing.' This year, I think winning was validation for all the work that I've put in over the last few years to get myself back to this place where I'm winning majors. I'm excited for the road ahead. I'm excited for this week, I'm excited for Aronimink next week [PGA Championship], Shinnecock [US Open], Birkdale [The Open]. I feel like, if anything, I'm more motivated after what happened at Augusta this year than I've ever been."
McIlroy has also shared that mindset publicly, with the PGA Tour posting "Hungry for more" alongside highlights of the Masters defence, underlining the current mood around the player.
With the Masters defence, the career Grand Slam and a run of majors ahead, McIlroy enters this phase of the season with clear goals. The comments and schedule show McIlroy intends to build further on recent achievements rather than treat Augusta as an endpoint.
