Rory McIlroy is set to face JJ Spaun in a play-off at the Players Championship on Monday. McIlroy, trailing by four shots initially, surged back with a birdie-eagle start. He took the lead before a weather delay halted play. After resuming, he birdied the 12th hole, gaining a three-shot advantage with six holes left. However, he faltered, allowing Spaun to catch up.
The tournament faced interruptions due to weather conditions, pushing the play-off to an additional day. The delay meant there wasn't enough daylight on Sunday for the three-hole play-off. This extension adds pressure on both players as they prepare for the decisive round.

Spaun remained resilient during the final stretch, securing birdies on two of the last five holes. This effort brought him level with McIlroy at 12 under after 72 holes. "This amount of pressure is the most I've ever been under," Spaun shared with Sky Sports. He acknowledged McIlroy's prowess but remained optimistic about his chances.
McIlroy previously clinched the Players Championship title in 2019 by one stroke. Reflecting on his aspirations for another win, he expressed how much it would mean to join the ranks of multiple winners like Scottie Scheffler and Tiger Woods. "It would mean an awful lot to win," he stated.
Despite his strong start and initial lead, McIlroy missed opportunities that could have secured victory. "I feel like I gave myself chances to close the door and win this golf tournament - and I didn't quite do that," he admitted to Sky Sports.
In contrast, reigning champion Scottie Scheffler ended tied for 20th place after scoring a one-over 73 in his final round. Meanwhile, Tom Hoge, Akshay Bhatia, and Lucas Glover shared third place at 10 under par.
The upcoming play-off promises intense competition as both players aim for victory amidst challenging conditions. McIlroy remains focused on executing well in the final stretch while Spaun seeks to leverage his newfound confidence against a formidable opponent.
