Rory McIlroy Expresses Optimism Despite Challenges At Players Championship

Rory McIlroy shares his thoughts after a mixed performance at the Players Championship, where he faced challenges yet remains in contention. He acknowledges missed opportunities but looks forward to the final round.

Rory McIlroy expressed disappointment after the third round of the Players Championship, feeling he missed opportunities despite staying in contention. He dropped four shots off the lead on Saturday. JJ Spaun leads by one shot going into the final round, having scored 70 in the third round to reach 12 under. McIlroy managed to stay competitive with a closing birdie, finishing with a one-over 73.

McIlroy was briefly within one shot of the lead but faltered with three bogeys over six holes on the back nine due to strong winds. This slip saw his chances diminish, though he remains tied for fifth place with Akshay Bhatia and Corey Connors at eight under. Bud Cauley surged into second place with a six-under 66, trailing Spaun by just one shot.

McIlroy Remains Positive After Players Championship

Spaun maintained his solo lead throughout the back nine and secured it by sinking a dramatic 25-foot putt for par on the last hole. With thunderstorms forecasted, Sunday’s tee times have been moved earlier. Spaun is focused on maintaining his form, stating, "I’ve just got to address it as another round." He aims to finish strong, drawing confidence from previous tour victories.

Meanwhile, world number one Scottie Scheffler finds himself tied for 16th at five under after a level-par 72 on Saturday. Frustrated by errors that distanced him from the leaders, Scheffler needs an exceptional final round to aim for a third consecutive title at Sawgrass.

Reflecting on his performance, McIlroy told Sky Sports he felt he played better than his score indicated. "Every dropped shot I felt like was soft," he said. He mentioned three-putting on several holes and taking four shots from close range on another hole as key mistakes. Despite these errors, McIlroy controlled his ball well overall.

The Northern Irishman acknowledged some sloppy mistakes around the greens but remained optimistic about his position in the tournament. "I feel like I left a lot out there," McIlroy admitted but added that finishing with a birdie was satisfying.

The competition remains fierce as players prepare for the final day at Sawgrass. With weather conditions potentially impacting play, all eyes will be on how contenders like Spaun and McIlroy handle the pressure in pursuit of victory.
